Education platform Senai recently hired architecture firm Solo Arquitetos to design their new office in Londrina, Brazil.

“When we were invited to participate in this initiative, we knew the importance of a space with such a proposal for the development of the region, and also the great responsibility of serving a public interest company, with rigid and well-defined processes, which required a high degree of detailing on all construction and design drawings.

The space chosen to host this initiative was a corporate slab measuring approximately 540m2 on the 30th floor of the Palhano Premium Business Condominium, located in the Gleba Palhano area, the highest point in the city and offering users a panoramic view of Lake Igapó and its urban surroundings.

At the very beginning, the biggest challenge was to organize the spaces needed in the floor plan. Despite being a large room, it has a “U” shape that naturally divides the space into three different sectors. Therefore, our approach took advantage of this shape and the position of the existing bathrooms to create a new support bar at the base of this “U”: an articulating line that recognizes the different sectors of the space, bringing together the support spaces, and thus freeing all the balconies of the property for common use. This nucleus brings together a series of meeting rooms of different shapes, sizes and purposes, each with a different ambience based on the institution’s branding colors, just like small caves in a large volume painted in black, which creates an interesting contrast with the adjacent workspaces, in more neutral tones, suitable for long hours of developers’ programming.

In addition, there are also two highlight spaces of the HUB. The access, articulated by a large trapezoidal-shaped piece of furniture, which through its shape creates an empty space for fast talks, with support space and varied seating areas. And also the pantry, a natural meeting point for every office, which often ends up being relegated to a simple door. Here, the pantry is shaped like a cafeteria, with a kitchen, bar and built-in tables. The position on the floor plan was carefully chosen so that it could be next to the multipurpose space and the training room, imagining a joint use of the three spaces during events with a larger number of people.”

A team of designers and architects from architectural firm Contacto Atlântico recently designed a new office for educational organization Contacto Atlântico in Lisbon, Portugal.

“Located in the iconic Amoreiras Towers, in Lisbon, the proposal for the renovation of this office involves the design of two spaces of different functions, shades and materials, dividing through the flexible glass plan, respectively the work and reception area, of the meetings.

The first, in wood, segmented through carpentry, respects a spatial hierarchy according to the needs of the jobs. The second, broader, constitutes a more social space, using a more neutral color. In this way, the contrast and harmony between two spaces is achieved that complement each other functionally and formally, aiming that both benefit from the view over the city and natural lighting,” says Contacto Atlântico.

Education institution Cefora recently hired interior design studio Twodesigners to design their new office in Brussels, Belgium.

“The main request of Cefora’s team was to make their collaborators want to work more regularly in the main office by offering them an ergonomic, cosy and inspiring work environment. The integration of a meeting space for the teams as well as polyvalent and creative training rooms was also part of the initial thinking.

From this observation, Twodesigners’ team imagined, drew and shaped a space which gathers aesthetics, functionality and comfort. The collaborators are happy to enjoy their new offices, both very pleasant and at the cutting edge of modernity. The space of the new Cefora office being consequantly big, Twodesigners called thir-parties to ensure an expertise in all domains and all phases of the project’s progression. Our team of interior architects and designers worked with a general entrepreneur, a engineer’s agency as well as a coordinator for weekly reunions.

The acoustic of the place was an aspect of the layout that was studied and thought through a lot. It was important to focus on creating something that was flawless. This is an hidden part of the expertise of Twodesigners that also provides a technical mastery in all of their projects. Technicity is key, but that’s not all ! The antihero team then used their brain to present aesthetic, natural and changeable layouts to Cefora, in the big interior space.

For many parts of the layout, we used wood and felt, to give it a welcoming and motivating atmosphere. Also we chose to set up two vegetal walls, to give the space a cosy and natural ambience, which is pleasing to the collaborators coming to work every day at Cefora. For the graphic side of the space of Cefora, Twodesigners used reinjected wood, including for the signage support of the door’s plaques. Playful and colorful typographical animations on the theme of leanring were added for a studious ambiance but relaxed at the same time, a point that Olivier Lambert and his team really wanted to reflect in their space,” said TwoDesigners

Public university Anglia Ruskin University recently hired workplace design firm Oktra to design their new office in London, England.

“For Anglia Ruskin University, creating a centre of academic learning meant focusing on functionality and simplicity. The nature of the university meant we had to create multiple study settings that enabled students to plug-in where necessary for task-focussed activity-based working.

Designing a university for young adults, as opposed to an office, the layout needed to be simple and intuitive – driving a focus on wayfinding and branding within the space. We also had to consider different statuary requirements, with a greater demand on accessibility and functionality for all.

The final space has been transformed for employees and students alike. There are two reception areas, one impressive library, one central community area, sixteen classrooms and an area for employees with a teapoint, offices and three meeting rooms. The combination of high-concentration workspaces and collaboration areas provides ARU’s students with the tools to work at the best of their ability,” says Oktra.

A team of designers from workplace design firm Area recently designed a new part workspace, part student hub for University of Surrey in Guildford, England.

“The University of Surrey wished to transform an old building on campus into a modern student hub, acting as a drop-in for students needing advice or looking for a collaborative place to work.

The client wanted an agile, multi-purpose touchdown space that would attract students and put them at ease. The design had to support a friendly, responsive approach to service provision, with students receiving a personal welcome on arrival.

Following lengthy discussion about what the space needed to deliver, the university called in Area to provide a number of design solutions. There was a comprehensive consultancy process involving formal and informal sessions with staff and students, and the internal PR team helped to communicate ideas and feedback.

The new facility encompasses space for focused individual working, group collaboration and big-screen presentations, as well as quiet rooms providing a haven for closer 1-1 discussions. Fitting the zones together was like piecing together a jigsaw, providing the necessary functionality while maintaining a harmonious whole. The design is flexible, with furniture that can be moved and reconfigured according to need.

The result is a warm, welcoming space with playful, stylish furniture and decorative touches, such as the recurring honeycomb motif, generating a lively, contemporary vibe. The different zones are delineated by floor finishes, screens and aesthetic style, without losing the overall sense of organic cohesion. This is a reassuring and comfortable place where students come to meet, consult or chill, which has received excellent feedback,” says Area.

Mount Vernon, an innovative education institution focused on preparing students for the real world, recently reached out to interior design Flags of Origin to design their new part campus, part workspace in Georgia, Atlanta.

“A collision of flexible spatial strategies, collaborative priorities, and multifunctional uses, the design influences express a variety of stories…

From glass innovators in Silicon Valley to a group of creative and talented makers and carvers from Asheville, North Carolina. From a corporate dining service to a local coffee entrepreneur. From colorful and fun furniture from Melrose Ave to industrial scissor pendants from a rough neighborhood on the outskirts of Moscow. From garage doors to vertical movable walls…

This new, unique, innovative Upper School building pushes all the limits of what school can look like. In many ways, does it even look like a school?

On a 40-acre Upper Campus, Mount Vernon designed and constructed a 3.5-story, 60,000 square foot facility for high school students (grades 9-12). Each floor in this dynamic, engaging building is known as a district and each district has two distinct neighborhoods, composed of community spaces, kitchen areas, quiet zones, faculty hubs, and flexible learning studios (VS Furniture) with vertical movable walls and 22 garage doors.

One travels from one neighborhood to the next by crossing the “Bridge” (inspired by the highline in New York City), encompassing maker, design, and fabrication labs as well as STEM and micro labs.

In the Arts District, there are dedicated spaces for a virtual reality and graphics design lab, audio production studio, printmaking studio, drawing and painting studio, rehearsal hall, and black box theater.

A communal space descends to the Café, which features the Ground Floor Coffee Company, handcrafted furniture constructed by MJO Studios (Asheville) and the Servery designed by FLIK Dining Services. This futuristic building is encompassed by 10,000 square feet of dynamic, intelligent View Glass out of Silicon Valley, which responds to sun patterns to control glare and optimize daylight, while reducing the tonnage to heat and cool the building and providing an exceptional experience for cognitive development,” says Flags of Origin

Open Universities Australia, a higher education organisation that allows students study and graduate online, hired interior design firm Spectrum Australia Group to design their new office in Melbourne, Australia.

“The requirement was to create innovative open spaces that were dynamic, interactive, team orientated, multi-functional and a collaborative new workplace that encouraged a culture of connectivity. The process was open, collaborative and engaging from the start with “Blue Sky Thinking” workshops, and ongoing focus group input. The new office is a colourful intervention over the 2700m2 space, leveraging 3 story high atrium ceilings in the Reception and Town Hall meeting spaces with full height trees creating a relaxing welcoming environment on arrival. The open plan spaces are lined with writable walls which are constantly changing. The core messages are reflected in unique and amazing graphics with bold statements and colour. From the dedicated staff hub, the corporate feel has been abandoned and is now overlayed with a comfortable residential and fun vocabulary. Casual meetings are held over a game of pool and the street mural artist has created an urban vibe around the flexible multi-meeting gathering zones. Open Universities have adopted the changes which has had a positive impact on the new possibilities for workplace culture. The Spectrum Australia team took ownership of the design, construction and project management processes. The project was delivered on time and within budget. A traditional leaf burning ceremony was held at the opening to acknowledge the Wiradjuri Tribe being the originals land owners,” says Spectrum Australia Group

Leo Cussen Centre for Law, an education center for practical legal training, recently hired architecture firm Gray Puksand to design their new headquarters in Melbourne, Australia.

“After three decades in their previous premises in the heart of Little Bourke Street, Leo Cussen Centre for Law relocated to their new home at 15 William Street, Melbourne in December 2018. Situated on the edge of Melbourne’s legal precinct the new headquarters takes advantage of stunning river views and the surrounding CBD outlook. Gray Puksand worked collaboratively with Leo Cussen Centre for Law’s executive team to develop a design approach that respected the values, tradition and culture of the organisation while strengthening their presence as the provider of choice within the Law Fraternity. Jennifer Lyons, Associate at Gray Puksand, said design engagement commenced in January 2018 with an intense series of briefing workshops undertaken over a period of three months. The outcomes forming the design language that is welcoming, professional, sophisticated and inclusive. Leo Cussen Centre for Law also wanted to provide a sense of community, enhance collaboration and knowledge sharing amongst their staff, student cohort and the Law Fraternity. Spanning 4,400sqm across two levels, the large floor plates and inter-connecting stair facilitate the connection between the student learning spaces on level 15 and the professional workspaces and conference facilities on level 16. This deeply considered merging of workplace and education facilities contributes to the potential for informal learning and offers students an appreciation for their future placement in a professional work setting. The planning is designed to minimise hierarchy and to elevate the student mindset with opportunities to mingle and network both with fellow students and practicing lawyers at varying stages of their career. With 160 students onsite on a daily basis the planning for Level 15 has been carefully considered to provide a variety of spaces to facilitate opportunities for formal and informal training, collaboration and knowledge sharing, social interaction and areas for focus and contemplation,” says Gray Puksand

Architects and designers from Marvel Architects have recently completed a renovation of New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Central King Building located in Newark, New Jersey.

“The renovation of this building into an Academic Center will reconnect the school to the city through a transformation of its brutal 1970s façade. The program proposes to restore and alter the 1912 building envelope to create dramatic physical and visual connections from the campus into the grand 1912 landmark. The centerpiece of the project is a Center for Innovation and Discovery. It is accessible to students and visitors alike, where exhibit, production and presentation spaces are organized to encourage cross-pollination of ideas. High tech classrooms, instructional labs and studios are designed on a flexible model, able to accommodate moderated discussions, lecture formats or small group collaboration and study. An 800-seat auditorium will be renovated, while the existing gym and pool will be repurposed as academic spaces. With social components tied to teaching, research and study, the new Academic Center will act as a counterpoint to the Student Center,” said Marvel Architects
