Architecture firm HED recently moved into a new office in Los Angeles, California, which they designed themselves.

“The new HED LA office is designed to foster creativity, promote collaboration, and support the well-being of our community. Activity is focused on the HUB: an open space that is the center of activity for the entire office. The HUB extends from one end of the building to the other. On one end is the central production facility, with the model shop/maker space, material library, pin-up spaces, interactive projection walls, and flexible team “war room” areas. On the opposite end is the “front door” of arrival, reception, display area, meeting rooms, lounging and casual seating for clients and staff. Connecting the two ends is the café, with and expansive island that functions as a community gathering space and collaboration zone with adjacent collaboration booths that add another layer of collaboration and community engagement. Free-address and dedicated workstation areas flow around the HUB, and pin-up and spontaneous collaboration spaces extend throughout the entire space. In addition, areas of more quiet focus ranging in size from individual to 2-4- and 4–6-person small huddles, to large and extra-large conference rooms are easily accessible from every part of the office.

COVID-19 hit in the middle of development of our design, and rather than stop or continue business as usual, the HED team used the challenge as an opportunity to study what the post-COVID-19 workspace could be. The design team’s focus changed from thinking of the office as a space to house all employees under one roof into a space to provide a HUB that reflects the HED LA culture. The team pivoted to augment the ability for the space to inspire and innovate. Private offices were eliminated, shared spaces were increased, and the entire office space was transformed into an active, collaborative HUB that attracts staff back to the office for the type of work it supports.”

Publishing company 1517 Media recently hired architecture and interior design studio Studio BV to design their new office in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“The concept for the new 1517 Media office is about connecting to each other. The shift from downtown into the North Loop provides 1517 Media a chance to re-write the fabric of their office. How they meet, who comes to work, how do they feel inspired. The work that 1517 Media does is essential. Through their creativity and brilliance, they translate the past into the present. Creating stories and messages that have resonated through the ages but are new again.

This work is essential for their community and creating this work of faith requires connections. Those will be digital, physical and emotional. The new office will support these modalities. Work will happen in the office and away from it. Coming to the office will inspire the teams at 1517 Media to create new products and materials that will go to market and engage their community.

“The new office features and showcases the work of 1517 Media upon your arrival,” said Betsy Vohs, Studio BV Founder and CEO. “The product and media bookcase wall becomes the center of the space. Translating information and bringing people together to create. The reading room space is the welcome gallery and the anchor for the office.”

The enclosed workspaces support creativity and privacy. The open areas are near the light. The cafe creates a connection and a hub in the office. The new enclosed spaces will have new technology paired with existing furniture to create a new sense of place.

The next evolution of the 1517 Media office requires teams to be mobile. Teams will move around the office to do their best work. They will come to work to meet and collaborate and to connect with each other. Most of the focus work will happen away from the office. This new office is a catalyst for people to do their best work in a place that is designed to support the creative process.”

Creative agency The Bloc recently hired interior design studio Studio Fōr to design their new office in New York City, New York.

“The space’s open concept has a casual, creative feel that reflects the agency’s own brand. With a variety of meeting spaces and work areas, as well as standout views for all to enjoy, the design fosters efficiency and inspiration.

The historically industrial, mercantile and marine context of what is now the Financial District in Manhattan inspired the overall aesthetic of the space including materials, finishes, and product selections. This inspiration also influenced the design of custom components, including the custom bench system at the office perimeter, as well as workstations with solid wood desktops and raw steel components.

Among the priorities of the design: inspiring creativity, fostering collaboration between the accounts- oriented and creative teams with ample room for a variety of meeting spaces, and leaving the views of the river and beyond unobstructed for all to experience. These goals were achieved by creating three distinct sections within the open office areas, which were further distinguished by being set at various elevations: raised platforms with offices and conference rooms, workstation areas, and perimeter meeting spaces.”

Interior design firm Studio BV recently designed a new interior for One Southwest Office Building in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

The renovation of the One Southwest Office Building (OSWX) is emblematic of a radical shift in office trends during the pandemic. This building was 80% vacant before the renovation. It is now 90% leased in less than one year.

There are two major factors that are driving this turn around. A large exodus of downtown Minneapolis and the relocation of office spaces back to the suburbs to align with where people live. The second factor is redesigning the building and brand to reflect a contemporary, modern and adaptable office building that supports what tenants are looking for in an office. Work norms and behaviors are shifting. Companies are looking for key components in a new office like easy parking, great access to highways, and amenities. This building had two of the three key components, but it was lacking amenities. The building was outdated and very drab. The atrium space was under utilized and had fake plants and park benches.

“The design team reimagined the atrium. The strategy was to create a large space for meeting, lounging and gathering,” said Betsy Vohs, Studio BV Founder and CEO. “New furniture, rugs, plants, lighting and media create a compelling space to spend your workday.” The other large shift was moving the front door to align with the large parking deck. The new front door has a new exterior plaza, door system, entry and welcome are and two large stair features.

The one stair connects the existing cat walks to each other. The floor plates are a big U shape. There were existing cat walk connections over the atrium that were underutilized. The design team redesigned these and created a stair that connected these together. The other large stair connects the new entry level to the atrium space. This wood stair has places to sit and gather and creates a strong connection between the atrium space and the main entry. The coffee shop will complete the space and create an amenity for the users of the building and be the anchor of the atrium.

Advertising company Saatchi & Saatchi recently hired architecture and interior design studio Blitz to design their new office in El Segundo, California.

“As we dove into Saatchi & Saatchi’s world and learned about how their teams developed projects it became clear that the creatives needed a safe space to build and break and re-build ideas and concepts before formally pitching to their project leads. The “idea” became its own constituent in the project – something to be considered spatially and solved for specifically. Whenever a design decision needed to be made, we returned to the question: “what is in the best service to protect the idea?”.

Our primary Client shared a desire to create a new home for the agency that supported exploration and fostered curiosity. The meandering path provides views across open “fields” (neighborhoods) and links up a series of protective seed pods (project areas / rooms) for safe and hidden idea generation; and garden walls to define the crops and showcase / pin-up the harvest. Apertures and strategic wayfinding allow the project to unfold rather than revealing itself all at once,” says Blitz.

Body brand Billie recently hired interior design studio Office of Tangible Space to design their new office in New York City.

As a nod to where Billie products live, the office features subtle hints of sleek bathroom materials. This includes a curved tiled wall at the entrance of the space and textured glass blocks that form the walls of conference rooms. An open concept, designated bathroom vanity creates open space for the team to test new body care formulas.

Other key design features include venetian plaster that brings texture and warmth to the space and custom desks with fun table legs. When asked about the inspiration behind the design, Yarinsky shared, “We posed what we thought were 2 interesting questions: One was how can we challenge the use of traditional building materials that may be traditionally thought of as “masculine” or “feminine” and the other was how would you turn a bathroom into an office? We wanted to elevate the design in this new phase of our partnership, conveying the brand across every detail.”

These thoughtful details not only speaks to the conceptual designs but also reflects the flexibility that Billie’s leadership is championing for their team.“We intentionally created space to allow for ultimate flexibility, with desks and conference rooms across scale so people can spread out safely or quickly catch-up with a colleague. The office is made for transient collaboration, encouraging people to come into work without adding in walls or limitations.”

Private creative agency recently reached out to interior design studio Studio For to design their new office in New York City, New York.

“This workplace for a mid-sized creative agency in Manhattan was designed to attract and retain top talent in one of the world’s most competitive markets. The leadership of the agency tasked Studio For with creating an environment where their culture of innovation can thrive and grow. Acting as a canvas for the work, a sophisticated neutral color palette provides a backdrop where creatives can feel inspired—but not distracted —by their surroundings. Vinyl wood flooring at the entry balances the various gray tones in the office while also incorporating warmth and being cognizant of office acoustics.

Other wood elements are found in furniture and a meeting enclosure with perforated wood panels. Floating wood shelves further soften the space and provide a place for plants that add color and a biophilic element. A range of seating options from lounge chairs to high top tables in multiple collaborative environments incite creativity and provide teams with options to meet in various places and positions.

This flexibility facilitates account managers, copywriters and art directors to move about freely as they focus on conceiving and executing world-class campaigns for their international clients,” says Studio For.

Advertising and marketing company Rise and Shine hired architecture interior design firm Studio BV to design their new office in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“The new office supports a new way to work and prioritizes what is most essential about work,” says Kevin DiLorenzo, Rise and Shine and Partners President/CEO. “We made a strategic decision to move to a Minneapolis neighborhood near the lakes and remake what our office could be.”  The new office is in a new timber structure that is full of texture and simplicity and the new office operates like a home. The anchor of the space is a large kitchen gathering space that is connected to a roof top deck. The deck has views of the neighborhood and their favorite ice cream shop downstairs.  That favorite local ice cream maker even created a new flavor for them called Rise & Shine!

The new office features a signature light in the main conference room, visible from the stairs, elevator and entry.  The use of color and contrast creates intimacy and definition throughout the space.  The light options are metaphors for the lighthouse and the beacon that welcomes the team everyday to the space and to the place of creativity in the meeting room.

The new office features concrete floors, wood architecture, and glass.  The intervening design work focuses on saturation as a point of contrast to the warm ceiling and wood columns.  This contrast in color is seen in the interior walls that contrast with the white perimeter walls.  The color creates definition and drama in the space.

“Our new space embraces new world realities,” says DiLorenzo. “We call it ’the Hive,’ because it has great energy and people can buzz in and out as needed. Our people have demonstrated a great ability to work from anywhere, but we still crave opportunities to connect and collaborate in person.”

Architecture firm Damon Farber recently hired architecture & interior design firm Studio BV to design their new office in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“The concept for the new Damon Farber office is about natural materials and connections. This idea comes from the work they do, connecting people to nature and making strong relationships between the interior and exterior spaces. This is clear in their new office space with the connection of the deck to the cafe and work areas. The concept of connections is clear when you walk into the space. The visitor sees the work, both in process and the rich palette of materials that create the landscap es. The critique space and open work lounge invites teams and visitors to become part of the design process. Creating a welcoming and rich visual texture when you arrive will be the library and display built in wall.

This wall contains important materials and a monitor to display the work the team is creating. This lounge area becomes the bridge between the enclosed meeting spaces and the open work and collaboration areas. The work environment is flexible and transparent and puts the teams and work first, with multiple places to connect and draw. The cafe space becomes a focal point with great amenities and a connection to the roof top deck. This deck feature will be the heart of the office supporting work and play for the Damon Farber team and their clients.”

Financial services company CreditSights recently hired architecture firm Kostow Greenwood Architects to design their new office in New York City.

“The overall design provides multiple break-out spaces for collaborative and individual work. An expansive, south facing café encourages casual interaction or becomes another individual workspace in natural sunlight. A glass wall with large sliding doors allows the Conference Lounge with sofas to become an extension of the Conference Wing with meeting table and chairs or create two distinctive areas for groups to meet. The 3Form LightArt Echo Fixture is a notable design element with two important functions – providing light and acoustic rating similar to a suspended acoustical ceiling without reducing the ceiling height. The open plan office, sit-to-stand desks, promote easier collaboration between teams and healthier daily physical activity.

Adjacent workrooms, with digital room schedulers, are an alternative enclosed workspace for one to four employees. Reception connects the two wings: West – open plan office and East – conference rooms. The east conference wing contains four conference rooms that can accommodate from 6 to 12 people around tables with additional side seating. A separate Flash Studio with acoustical separation, green screen backdrop, and recording equipment facilitates more varied vlogs for their clients’ needs. The conference room adjacent to the café has white board paint walls to facilitate team brainstorming”., says Kostow Greenwood Architects
