A team of designers from interior design firm Maike Design recently designed a new office for business studio Studio Sisu.

“The 1930’s warehouse shell has been transformed into a bright and inspiring creative work space. Providing different zones of use throughout offers the flexibility required for both collaborative work and individual creative exploration whilst retaining the original building’s sense of scale.

Studio Sisu is designed to address the physical limitations and isolation of an industry fractured by small studio business models. It brings together complimentary businesses to create opportunities for discussion and interaction amongst peers. Encouraging creative collaboration of ideas and skills creates an environment otherwise inaccessible to small businesses or individual practitioners.

Using a mixture of high and low cost materials, furniture and fittings has allowed the design to create a highly crafted and unique environment within the specified budget. The inclusion of refurbished antique furniture and fittings allows the new building work to sit comfortably alongside the existing factory structure.

The design of the new interventions and custom designed furniture, uses a simple materials palette accentuating the highly tactile surfaces of the original building.

The new entry pulls back from the street and softens the solidity of the building, providing the studio with a distinctive presence within its laneway context. The entry doors emphasise the height of the space and their offset placement directs visitors to the office without the need for a formal reception.

The ground level is a flexible, shared space allowing for large-scale projects or workshops not usually catered for in an office environment. Amenities on this level leave the entire upper level free from any solid visual interruptions.

The upper level office uses a simple palette to accentuate the highly tactile surfaces of the original building. Strategic use of screening and joinery creates distinct zones whilst retaining the sense of volume which made the original shell such a unique and appealing space,” says

Architectural firm DesignInc recently moved into a new office in Adelaide, Australia, which they designed themselves.

“In designing a new studio, DesignInc Adelaide began by challenging their thinking in how they use space. They considered areas that add the most value to daily activities, identified zones underutilised in their existing fitout and generated discussions about how the built environment could improve creativity and interactions within the studio. They proposed that the activities of the studio should be front and centre, showcasing the way they work. During all stages of the project, the design team celebrated the process of design and hands-on learning by workshopping ideas and displaying concepts for comment. Proximity to the new space provided an opportunity to use the project as a teaching tool for graduates during construction.

The traditional reception was reduced to a compact service desk and the working space was enlarged to include collaboration benches and a purpose-built virtual reality suite. Generous natural light filters through the full height glazing that spans the open-plan work area. Air purifying plants are dispersed throughout active work and collaborative areas. Quiet spaces and flexible furniture in breakaway spaces enable people to step away from their desks. A large kitchen, social space and a staff entry with lockers service the team.

DesignInc Adelaide is committed to the reduction of waste through ongoing monitoring, education and the implementation of best practice within their studio. The fabric of the new studio incorporates materials that have recycled content and the existing air conditioning system and fire services were adaptively reused. They have considered the reduction of waste to landfill through dedicated recycling systems for paper, commingled, soft plastics and organics. Energy conservation has been achieved through programmed and motion-sensing LED lighting.

DesignInc Adelaide believes that the challenge of maintaining and improving their current level of environmental management and wellbeing requires a commitment to ongoing education and improvement. The new studio provides the opportunity to test the space as end-users and refine the design of sustainable workplaces,” says DesignInc.

Technology company Infosys hired architecture studio Buck&Simple to design their new office in Sydney, Australia.

“The nature of workplace design was changing. The COVID-19 pandemic forced many businesses to rethink how their staff would be working and provide more flexible spaces, adaptable to the new work paradigm.

Work from home, hotdesking, video, face to face meetings & project team collaboration are reflected in the varied form of the workplace.

Infosys Portland is a client focussed division of the Infosys group delivering bespoke responses to client supply-chain needs. This spoke to our own ethos of tailored responses and we saw this client experience as reminiscent of bygone eras when customer service truly was paramount… but brought forward to the 21st century with modern tech.
This became our inspiration for a design concept that spanned the years with a heady mix of the retro and modern. Vintage timber panelling, waxed leather clubs, bold colour, flexible workspaces, high tech.

Staff are able to tailor the space to their shifting work demands with ample breakout space and incidental social areas for those necessary water cooler chats.
With a contracted programme & juggling lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team delivered a unique and fresh fit out befitting the clients’ unique service on time and budget.”

Engineering consultancy Arup hired architecture and interior design firm Hames Sharley to design their new office in Perth, Australia.

“Due to unexpected growth, ARUP required an expansion office with significant programme pressure and against a procurement environment increasingly disrupted by bushfires, the TOLL hack and COVID-19. The company took up level 8 of its existing building, a space already considered by six other potential tenants and dismissed because of its unusual layout.

The Hames Sharley design team worked with ARUP to understand how the organisation would work across the existing level 14 and the new level 8 in an ABW environment, using level 8 as a rotating team space or a potential joint venture project office. The layout included two oversized meeting/brainstorm rooms, a functional kitchen and a great deal of layout space that took functional cues from level 14 and replicated its finishes palette, to provide consistency.

Hames Sharley interrogated the supply chain to specify furniture and materials that would meet an aggressive programme, including workstations being installed on day eight of construction. We also supported ARUP through a hybrid tender process that allowed cost transparency and competition within a four-day pricing period.”

Data centre operator NEXTDC recently hired architecture and interior design firm Hames Sharley to design their new part office, part data center in Perth, Australia.

“Hames Sharley worked closely with Urbis and City of Perth (CoP) to deliver an outcome that worked for the local council and the client – balancing the security requirements with the City’s desire for an open and transparent public interface. As the architect and interior designer for P2 Perth, Hames Sharley also worked closely with subcontractors to deliver organised and considered services layout and routes, where possible.

The project provided several challenging scenarios, the greatest involving the need to deliver a non-public building with a public interface that also connected the street level.

Strong, bold architectural accents of red connect to emphasise 3D spatial geometries in NEXTDC, while spatial layering throughout controls lighting and sight-lines. Think refined industrial, exposed services and metallic finishes, which make up the overall design aesthetic.

Hames Sharley added further value by investigating and implementing, (within budget), the inclusion of breakout spaces to the street for additional façade activation and improved user experience.

The newly built facility is the pinnacle of data centre certifications worldwide. Tier IV infrastructure is a building block on top of the requirements for Tier III, adding complete fault tolerance to the infrastructure deployed on-site. Completely fault-tolerant infrastructure means that any individual equipment failures or distribution path interruptions that occur will have no impact on the overall operations of the facility.

The delivery method was Design and Construct, and Hames Sharley engaged early with the Head Contractor and sub-contractors on crucial design elements to ensure these critical elements were not overlooked, and the client achieved their optimal outcome.

With over 12,000m2 of technical data centre space at full fitout, P2 supports the highest-density, compute-intensive requirements for Perth organisations, and can scale from rack-ready cabinets to full contiguous rows and custom cages and private suites.”

A team of architects and designers from architecture firm FMD Architects designed a new office for private law firm in Melbourne, Australia.

“Nestled within the busy urban landscape, QC Chambers operates as a quiet space of contemplation for a QC within the Melbourne CBD. Functioning as a workplace and meeting place, it is also a space to contemplate, a moment of respite from the daily happenings of the court – an opportunity to recharge and think ahead of the next case.

The Chambers pivot around an artwork, Plate Glass 2, by Melbourne artist Sam Shmith. The urban train scene expressed, reinterprets the views out to the skyline beyond. Black tones throughout the space and lighting by Christopher Boots continue the dialogue with the artwork, offering shifting perspectives of the art, the chambers, and the city itself. A space which provides ongoing contemplation and inspiration.

Tasmanian Oak veneer joinery mimics the city skyline and extends from the deep green carpet, counterbalancing the dark tones, and housing the necessities of the working chambers. A meeting table in the centre of the room greets guests, while a Churchill inspired standing desk on the far wall grants opportunities to work throughout the chambers. QC Chambers reinterprets the traditional urban life of a barrister, expressing it in a contemporary way,” says FMD Architects.

Accounting company West Carr & Harvey recently hired architecture & interior design firm Studiomint to design their new office in Geelong, Australia.

“By incorporating the buildings history into the fitout, we were able to provide West Carr & Harvey with a space that stands out in the competitive landscape while representing their balance of refinement and experience. A number of existing features and items in the old mill were repurposed or highlighted to tie the building’s history into the firm’s contemporary operation.

The floor itself throughout the space is the original slab used by the factory, simply re-finished and polished. Existing brickwork was cleaned up and used as feature walling in the fitout.

The wool mill’s old barn door, well maintained despite showing its history, was repurposed and included as the entrance to the staff room. Bathrooms featuring glass flooring expose old tunnels beneath the building.

Artwork on the wall along the open office shows a bird’s eye view of Port Geelong – an homage to the area in which West Carr & Harvey has been allowed to grow and flourish. We also incorporated biophilic design elements into the space through built-in desk planters and inclusion of natural wood. Both elements mimic nature just enough to enhance employee wellbeing while maintaining a sleek, professional aesthetic.

This design features several elements that have been repurposed from the former space, allowing us to preserve pre-existing materials rather than source new ones. By reusing old slab as a finished floor surface, incorporating the mill’s barn door in the break room and incorporating existing brickwork into the office’s feature wall, we were able to both honour the building’s heritage and reduce the carbon footprint of the design. The energy needs of the space have also been reduced thanks to ample natural light that reduces reliance on electrical lighting.”

Coffee machine manufacturer recently hired interior design firm Native Design Workshop to design their new office in Melbourne, Australia.

“The VA Experience Lab’ is the new home for internationally renowned coffee machine company, Victoria Arduino in Australia. This space is a workspace for the company’s team, as well as a place where industry professionals can gather, view, test and learn how to use the coffee machines, while also gaining an understanding of the products and their origins. Furthermore, the Experience Lab will act as a training ground for some of the best baristas in the world when preparing for competition.

With such a small floorplate to respond to the numerous programmatic requirements, we had to consolidate ideas and go away from compartmentalising function, which was given as a directive from some of the stakeholders. Instead, we opted for an approach that embraces the modern workspace and allows for the people of Brunswick to actually see what goes on in the space, which is what the actual occupants of this space wanted, to become a part of the community and not just another business that turns its back on the street. With this mindset, we built upon a very Melbourne approach to the coffee game and took the idea of the ‘hole in the wall’ coffee shop to another level,” says Native Design Workshop.

Architecture firm SGKS Architects moved into a new office in Abbotsford, Australia which they designed themselves.

“Our objective with this project was to create a new home for our second-generation architectural practice – a contemporary studio space that would reflect the practice’s heritage and grow with it in the future.

Located alongside the Yarra on a prominent Victoria Street site, the 135-square-metre office occupies a ground-floor tenancy of the Sanctuary apartment development. Bold geometry and honest materials create a masculine aesthetic. Raw concrete floors and columns contrast with timber-battened ceiling panels, while trailing greenery softens the hard edges. Frameless glass panels play with ideas of openness and enclosure, ensuring visual connections throughout the space while maintaining privacy where it’s needed.

Banks of smart desks provide a flexible open-plan layout – they can be reconfigured from meeting tables to individual work stations as the team evolves. The craft of making buildings has always been central to the firm’s ethos, so space for founder Peter Sgourakis’s hand drafting was accommodated in the design. Custom storage was installed, along with mobile pinboards to display work in progress. A well-loved print of Portofino from the original studio recalls the practice’s 40-year history.

The studio’s trademark crosshair motif is embedded in the design, creating a subtly branded interior. It appears as a window decal and again in the custom shelving unit suspended from a concrete pillar. Designed by director Henry Sgourakis, this finely detailed unit celebrates its own construction, with unpolished welds and a lustrous patina. Elsewhere, streamlined furniture from Space and Arthur G finishes the interior,” says SGKS Studio.

Architecture firm Adam Kane Architects recently moved into a new office in Melbourne, Australia, which they designed themselves.

“The inspiring new workspace is complemented by a number of custom made fittings and furniture pieces, creating a unique office that provides a glimpse into the future direction for the practice.

Brooding and elegant, the use of a rich grey hue in the architraves, ceiling and walls is cleverly contrasted by the abundance of natural light that floods the space.
On the ground floor, a small powder rooms sits next to a narrow staircase, discreetly hidden by a large, unassuming pivot door.

On the first floor, there is a subtle separation between the meeting room and main workspace, with a transition in floor levels ensuring that the spaces are kept individual. Custom steel-framed doors that stretch 3.6m high from floor to ceiling also allow the spaces to be closed off entirely, bringing flexibility to the office as a whole.

The bronze joinery ‘block’ is a feature of the workspace, creating a bold focal point that cleverly divides the formal and informal zones of the space. Clad in panels of custom dipped bronze, the block provides an everchanging play of light across its patinaed surface whilst concealing the kitchenette and sample library on its reverse.

The purposeful layering of grey provides a soothing backdrop to the office, allowing a collection of custom pieces to be accentuated, including a five-metre long, timber-veneer desk purpose built in it’s place. Another custom feature is a marble table supported by three polished plaster ‘pillars’, providing a place to gather and collaborate in the corner. Whilst the stone offcuts from the tabletop were used to create a secondary side table.”
