German social organization Aktion Mensch recently hired architecture and interior design firm Ippolito Fleitz Group to design their new office in Bonn, Germany.

“Our aim: To create a dynamic work world across 3900 m2 where differences are normal. Meeting the same demands as in the numerous projects that Aktion Mensch supports each month. Making innate values tangible. Creating a place where all emplo- yees feel they belong. To do this, we exploited our strengths as a multidisciplinary design studio to implement inclusion in a modern and sustainable way. While at the same time preser- ving the structural substance of this office building from 2003, because a responsible use of resources is just as important. –– This is how we like to work best: by taking the existing structure into account and working effectively within the given budget. And if everything must be implemented while business opera- tions continue, no problem. Responsibility shows itself best in cooperation.

After reorganising the total floor area into eight zones, work life is organised around a village square that forms the centrepiece of each area. As central meeting places, all village squares have their own theme, from which the colour scheme for the square and the adjacent department is derived. Each colour concept is completed by an individualised ceiling. This always provides a definite answer to the question »Where shall we meet?«: at the festival, the harbour, on the sports field, in the garden, the library or at the market. This not only improves orientation, but strengthens the sense of belonging. Neighbourhoods are culti- vated. At Aktion Mensch, cultural identity is created through real-life diversity. –– If nobody is excluded, then anonymity no longer has any place.

Employee diversity is illustrated in the bold colours of the room elements. Changeable furniture, soft materials and round shapes that are never perfectly round. Each of them is unique, just like the personalities who work here. A joy for life is expressed throughout. Differences are revealed, all of which appear quite normal here. A sense of well-being can be felt at all times. The space tells stories. And the work world is readable for every- one in their own language. –– Lust for life. Desire for diversity. Vibrancy. Diverse, variable, inward leaning, approachable, taking a stance. Equal rights on an equal footing. This is what distinguishes our work world for Aktion Mensch.

Communication hubs in village squares, which can be regrou- ped according to your requirements and preferences, promote identification with your work environment. Workplaces have mobile design elements that can be adapted individually. Flexi- bility is key here, also in order to ensure needs-based accessibi- lity. A high degree of self-determination, which our design con- cepts enable in a natural and intuitive way, is a vital prerequisite for fully functioning agility,” says Ippolito Fleitz Group.

Industrial auction house Surplex recently hired architecture firm raum.atelier to design their new office in Düsseldorf, Germany.

“With its curved building form and rounded corners, it is reminiscent of a “tube”, which can be traced back to the industrial location at that time. Today, new office complexes for various companies are increasingly settling in this area, such as Surplex GmbH.

Surplex GmbH is a partial tenant in “Theo 105” and is known as an international trading company, which buys and sells used industrial machines for wood and metal processing.

The simplicity and straightness of the building facade was taken up by raum.atelier and is reflected in the interior design of the almost 4000 m² office space.

Wall paneling and furniture constructions made of robust materials such as wood and steel deliberately relate to the Surplex product world and at the same time the connection to the industrially influenced region and building structure. A friendly and warm room atmosphere is created by the interplay with tinted, harmonious color compositions. Matt blue and gray tones run through the entire building area as wall and furniture colors and are complemented by a contrasting spectrum of red tones.

In addition to attractive conference and meeting rooms as well as functional open office areas on 6 floors, lounge areas were created that guarantee a pleasant change from the daily working routine. This includes the large kitchen, which invites people to linger with its modern and open character. It is the heart of the project, where customers and employees meet. Due to the different and flexible seating as well as the stepped platform, the area can easily be used for different events which offers a high degree of flexibility.

The project impresses with its reduced material and color design and establishes a connection to the historic shaped surroundings in a sovereign manner,” says raum.atelier.

Electric power industry company 50 Hertz recently hired interior design studio Seel Bobsin Partner to design their new office in Berlin, Germany.

“After moving to its own headquarters in 2016, the German transmission system operator 50Hertz Transmission based in Berlin, has moved into its next location in Europacity in the beginning of 2021.

Numerous team spaces, open communication and concentration areas have been created on four multi-space floors, to provide flexible work options that cover the different requirements of employees. These new workplace models are framed by an architecture that has a very industrial character. A high proportion of exposed concrete and open technical installations highlight this design.

Special oases, cafés on the 2nd and 4th floor for example, have been created to increase emotions and quality of stay. The dynamic and lively color compositions accompany a diverse selection of comfortable furniture that invite people to linger and exchange ideas.

The combination of raw architecture and vibrant color schemes creates exciting contrasts and harmonious interactions between all areas. Earthy, deep red tones and light ice blue merge with the cool grey of the surroundings. Transparent zoning elements with integrated planting are added to this scenery to provide a high- contrast design with small green accents that bring the area to life, invite people to feel at ease and stimulate creativity and exchange. Contrast becomes connection – concrete meets color.”

Video game company Ubisoft recently hired architecture & interior design firm raum.atelier to design their new office in Düsseldorf, Germany.

“The interior architecture office raum.atelier from Düsseldorf was assigned to elaborate and implement a new integrated interior design concept for the location in Düsseldorf.

Many different workplace, functional and communication areas such as open workspaces, private meeting rooms, phone boxes, service points and a large games lab ensure an individual and varied working atmosphere. To spatially reflect the company’s CI, the unique game worlds of Ubisoft were integrated into the interior design as large wallgraphics. This allows employees to immerse themselves in the gaming-worlds not only virtually, but also spatially. The direct reference to the location in Düsseldorf also plays an important role in the design. Conference rooms with themes referring to the city Düsseldorf create a direct connection to the location and form a suspense contrast to the city themes of the locations in Mainz and Berlin.

After completion of the first construction phase at the end of 2019, which predominantly included the open-space areas, service points and meeting rooms, the areas of the second construction phase were also successfully realized at the end of 2020.

The new space includes the entire reception area as well as numerous special rooms and offer employees a cinema in addition to a large and a small event area with an affiliating cafeteria. The social hub with integrated café bar and casual furnishings forms the centerpiece on the ground floor and invites to interact, communicate and to linger. The retreat room, which can be used as a place to relax, the inviting terrace and a small library round off the space,” says raum.atelier.

A team of designers and architects from architecture and interior design firm raum.atelier recently designed a new coworking space New Work Lab, located in Wissenschaftspark in  Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

“In the former laboratory area of the Gelsenkirchen Science Parc was implemented a new coworking space (New Work Lab) for start-ups and commuters from technology-oriented industries. In addition to 27 technically full equipped workplaces, there are retreat areas and communication zones which increase the quality of stay and create a great variety in the working process. In special areas such as the virtual reality room or the conference room, technologies of the future can be used and tested as part of a co-working study.

A lounge, a well-equipped coffee counter, think tanks, 3 standing workdesks and a relax area with massage chair complete the spaces. The materials used, the colors and the oversized logo create a direct reference to the science parc and underline the big loft atmosphere of the office,” says Raum Atelier.

IT company Jimdo recently hired interior design firm Laik.Design to design their new office in Hamburg, Germany.

“The concept attaches great importance to self-sufficient office space, which atmosphere radiates peace and quiet for concentrated work, without letting the surroundings appear uncommunicative. With 430 square metres, the renovated old building offers structured yet open work areas for around 40 workplaces. The spatial concept is complemented by a large meeting room, a workshop area, that can be flexibly used for workshops, several small micro-meeting rooms, an inviting communal kitchen and a cosy retreat area.

The entire design aims to represent a mixture of calm, concentration, dynamics, openness and cohesion.

In addition to the harmonious colour composition and the sound-absorbing ceiling panels made of natural materials, the hot-dip galvanised aluminium profiles of the glass partitions are the main design element of the area. That is reflected in the entire design by means of many small details.

Colour selection define work zones, dialogue rooms and creative areas so that various room concepts are generated. In addition, the simple yet inspiring design conveys a warm and professional atmosphere that meets the client’s needs,” says Laik.Design

Pharmaceutical company Wörwag recently hired architecture and interior design firm Ippolito Fleitz Group to design their new office in Stuttgart, Germany.

“The atrium greets you with a backdrop of illuminated shelving that would pass as a collection of ‘objets trouvés’ from German industry: paint samples, a washing machine door, a driver’s cab. The intention here is to reveal the ‘we’ at Wörwag. Which includes the product in its end use, something that should not remain abstract for the controller. But equally the emphasis on partnership with all the producers with whom this expert company from Zuffenhausen has pulled together in all matters of quality and excellence for over a century. And if you want to see the people behind the products, just take a left turn into the cafeteria: Here the workforce meets – live and in colour. The space is a coworking space, lunch location and chat corner in one. Moreover, the open facades allow passers-by to be a part of what is happening inside. Last but not least, the employees report that the food now tastes even better: “The chefs say they just enjoy their work a whole lot more!”

They are probably not the only ones either – because everything has been done to ensure that employees feel perfectly at home on the three office floors, too. In fact, this was one of the client’s primary concerns. At the same time, the brief was to create a space that moves with the times and promotes highly efficient working practices. And thirdly, the company’s identity should be rendered tangible.

The spatial response is a sophisticated open-office concept and a gigantic colour chart that spans the entire ceiling. This not only highlights the specific competence of Wörwag, it also zones the space for the individual teams. A total of 40 fabrics in 70 colours has been integrated here. While transparent conference rooms in the hallways ensure that every employee remains part of a whole, even when they are in a meeting.

In close dialogue with the workforce, various tasks were identified and solved in a targeted manner. For example, we dispelled the general assumption that an open-office layout leads to less ability to concentrate and less privacy: The office levels are now a mix of open and closed areas that offer employees a diversity of retreat options – from cosy alcoves to the conference room, the use of which can be digitally timed on the door. Moreover, sound-absorbing materials ensure that team meetings and phone conversations stay where they belong. And if you look closely, you will see that the pastel-coloured absorbers are modelled on Wörwag’s paint samples.

In this way, we have created an office in which communication and diversity are experienced in a completely novel way. An office that literally reveals the company’s true colours when evening falls: with its generous glass facades, the building is transformed into a true lighthouse of work worlds – visible to one and all,” says

Interior design studio Hidden Fortress recently designed a new office for event planning company Velokonzept.

“Their Berlin based office moved into a new location in 2017, which also required the interior design and furniture equipment to be renewed. Hidden Fortress was tasked to design the interior and furniture of the new headquarter and organize it’s realisation.

The premises are located in a new building, and were basically a 250m2 large rectangular hall on one floor. A good part of the effort was spent on dividing the space into a group of interlinking zones with various functions, while keeping the transparency and openness of the space as prominent as possible. This could be achieved with a custom-made glass wall system and a strong color code which divided the zones visually into islands in the hall. The furniture in each zone was colored accordingly.

While the owners wanted their individual spaces and offices acoustically optimized, they still liked the idea of a large transparent space. Neccessary parts of drywall were thus either replaced by the glass wall system or de-constructed and filled with colored installments, housing a variety of functions. Alltogether the main impression vaguely stimulates the image of a marketplace or central square of an old town. In combination with the open space and the colorful islands the interior represents the young and modern agility of the bycicle tradeshow brand,” says Hidden Fortress Design Studio Berlin.

A team of designers from workplace design firm Area recently designed a new office for software company Blue Yonder in London, England.

“The fit-out was to continue the high standards and dynamic approach established in Area’s earlier work for Blue Yonder’s offices. The design needed to reflect Blue Yonder’s corporate palette and design guidelines while creating a functional, appealing space that would support the work of the office and impress visitors. Area took on a design and project management role to ensure the contractors provided the quality of materials and finishes expected by the client.

The project was assisted by the client’s familiarity with our dedicated team, which helped to streamline the process. We worked to a very clear programme with a set of key milestones, well-defined objectives and a clear project budget. The client was keenly interested in the finishes and fittings, which resulted in the procurement of furniture from across Europe.

The initial plan for a straightforward operational space for programmers and scientists evolved into a more dynamic scheme, requiring the integration of a front-of-house suite, client washrooms and breakout space, along with a bespoke reception.

The completed design makes creative use of the angular lines dictated by the building’s singular footprint. Airy, open-plan working areas are juxtaposed with collaboration areas, acoustic booths and breakout seating where people can meet and chat. The meeting rooms are spacious and distinctive, with high-quality AV facilities.

Visual interest is supplied by judicious use of Blue Yonder’s corporate colours, attractive joinery in the form of finned ceiling and partition features, motivational imagery, and the coloured walls of the meeting rooms. The primary teapoint and communal space is welcoming and fun, with warm wood finishes, informal furnishings and table football”, says Area.

Coworking space provider Spielfeld recently hired architecture firm LXSY Architekten to design their new coworking space in Berlin, Germany.

“The former post office building made of red brick in Berlin’s Skalitzer Strasse, a historic listed building, has become a new and lively site for innovation. When designing the Co-Working and Event-Space Digital Hub SPIELFELD, LXSY ARCHITEKTEN focused on revisiting the history of the building. Selected historical elements have been incorporated into the design, in cooperation with the heritage protection agency. For example, the original colour scheme was restored and beams were exposed to reveal the supporting structure of the building.

The main focus of the heritage protection agency in the Digital Hub SPIELFELD was the former hexagonal post office counter hall. As the new location emphasises exploring digitalization, the interior space is shaped by the fixed position of a stage and surrounding break-out areas for workshops, which are divided by curtains, meaning that its can be flexibly divided as needed. The entrance is via the new foyer, which following a reworking of the ceiling also has the original hexagonal shape. The publicly accessible area includes an open café, meeting rooms, flexible co-working areas and a lounge area with seating steps. The heart of the area is a bar counter with red tiles in a zigzag profile. A staircase in the room leads to the basement, where WCs, wardrobe and storage areas are situated.
Next to the foyer there are corporate studios, which are temporarily rented out to external companies. In addition to the five offices, there is a small meeting room, a workshop and seminar room, a large conference room and a kitchenette. Open niches and cabins containing telephone boxes, meeting areas, storage space and open structures will be placed in front of the studios. The clear zoning of corporate studios, the “front garden” and the corridor creates additional spaces which can be opened or closed to each other to foster communication as well as concentration.

Carefully selected materials, geometric structures and a powerful recurring colour scheme create a minimalist appearance with a raw industrial character. Space defining elements take the form of boxes clad in birch wood, which cover a discreet black grid. The resulting pattern of connecting joints creates an additional visual mesh. The linear design is extended in the surrounding red steel lines that run through the rooms. Based on the markings of a sports field, these were lifted from the floor to the ceiling, creating a space-filling element. The steel construction serves as a curtain rail and as a design element. The surrounding curtains provide visual separation and the textiles also improve the acoustics. The rooms can be individually combined or connected, depending on the situation. Different zones offer flexibility and a range of possibilities for living and working, inviting users to move around and interact with one another.
The recurring colour concept consists of a historical pigeon blue shade as well as the striking rust and fiery red tones. Birch wood elements and the light linen- look curtains stand in contrast to the otherwise hard surfaces. The stone grey floor and selected materials complete a modern look for contemporary work. In the office and event rooms, established companies and start-ups meet for inspiration, cooperation and discussions about digital transformation. An open environment promotes this interaction, sparking creativity and sharing knowledge within the community while experimenting playfully with digitalisation,” says

Insurance company Euler Hermes recently hired interior design firm Seel Bobsin Partner to design their new office in Hamburg, Germany.

“The Hamburg-based planning office sbp was responsible for the interior design of the entire design concept. The innovative design concept with multispace structure ensures that Euler Hermes’ corporate culture is optimally expressed in these areas.

Parameters such as structural rethinking, flat hierarchies and digitalisation play a decisive role in the development of a modern working environment. Communication is also to be promoted in an overarching and decisive manner. Furthermore, sbp developed identity-giving and varied special areas as well as additional work opportunities for all employees, thus ensuring a high-quality working environment and better work organisation overall.

Green is good for you: Various studies have shown that more naturalness in the office building can make everyday work between desk and conference room more satisfying and healthier. People have an innate affinity with nature – this increases concentration, well-being and commitment for many employees and significantly reduces stress. The aim of sbp was therefore to increase the satisfaction of each individual through an attractive environment, as well as to minimise stress factors and impaired concentration as far as possible.

By using Biophilic-Design as a design method, sbp transferred the positive effects of nature on people into the building in a targeted manner and in various forms. With a balanced mix of biophilic colours, shapes, structures, large graphics and the use of natural plants, sbp evokes positive associations with nature and also ensures optimal orientation in the building. On each of the six floors, one type of plant serves as the thematic design basis: natural forms were sketched out in the wall and surface design. The complementary interplay with variable colour contrasts makes the special areas easily distinguishable. Spacious, atmospheric catering areas on the ground floor with a high quality of stay allow for all-day use. Due to the high transparency of the facade, the building is also open to the outside and reflects the corporate culture.”
