Software company HashiCorp recently hired interior design firm IDF Studio to design their new office in San Francisco, California.

“IDF Studio reimagined a stuffy office space for a systems-focused software company by playing up layered geometric motifs and introducing a sense of warmth. Dramatic 3D accent walls, custom wood slat dividers, hexagonal window film, and a string art interpretation of their logo speak to HashiCorp’s commitment to simple, modular service. The airy white kitchen hub with floating wood shelves and a lush plant wall rounds out the fresh and inviting look.”

HashiCorp develops custom Cloud infrastructure and management solutions for the world’s largest companies. Their San Francisco HQ embodies the company’s simple, modular approach to solving complex challenges. A calming gray-and-blue color palette, layered with geometric wall treatments, graphic rugs, and striking art pieces, transformed a staid office into a lively creative space,” says IDF Studio.

Technology company Dharma Labs recently hired interior design studio Rose Design to design their new office in San Francisco, California.

“Fintech firm, Dharma Labs’, office has an amazing Downtown San Francisco location with a five-story walk-up or a vintage freight elevator ride to reach their floor. They hired Rose Design to create an office that would reflect their vibrant and innovative team while adding polish and function to their nontraditional office space.

Honoring their bold and energetic culture along with a full reorganization of their spaces, Rose Design included interior updates, adding a black trim to accentuate the building’s red brick walls, and a custom gradient wall to break up the space and electrify the entrance. We also added refreshing plant life throughout the office –including a rooftop aromatic garden around community tables to take in the skyline.

The artwork commissioned from Alice Lee is a talking point when you arrive in their office and no detail is too small, we also incorporated custom, micro crypto kitty felt sculptures we commissioned after their favorites in their collection to greet you,” Rose Design.

Software company Fleetsmith recently hired interior design firm Rose Design to design their new office in San Francisco, California.

“Rose Design was tasked with incorporating Fleetsmith’s values and brand across the office through design. To accomplish the request, we used the range of their brand colors from their product on their conference rooms to energize those spaces but also created a lively backdrop to the central environment where everyone gathers with versatile lounges ready for an impromptu meeting, hangout, or their all-hands meeting. The reception was designed to introduce guests to Fleetsmith’s story by offering branded swag, and showcasing items like a memoriam to the first laptop to ever run their product, awards, and mementos.

The kitchen was also an important piece of the office, not only for its essential functions but also as a gathering moment and a place to host events. We added a lounge with a backdrop for memorable event photography and playful interactive decor that becomes a conversation piece and a communication tool. Ongoing education is a cornerstone of Fleetsmith’s mission, so we created a dedicated room “Dash’s Lab” featuring brand illustrations of their core values. Beyond wall treatments, furniture, and decor we also brought in lots of plant life to bring the space to life.

We transformed Fleetsmith’s office into a productive haven for their team; it also intentionally became the framework for their evolving community as they onboarded new hires and added new partners,” says Rosa Design.

Private financial services firm recently reached out to architecture and interior design studio RMW Architecture & interiors to design their new office in San Francisco, California.

“When a growing global financial services firm took up residence on the top floor of a 27-story building overlooking the San Francisco bay, they turned to RMW to create a memorable and breathtaking impression for both visitors and staff. Our accomplishment of this directive is evident upon entering the full-floor suite where visitors are greeted with the timeless elegance of the porcelain-tiled reception area. An uninterrupted sightline from the entry through the conference room offers an expansive view of the Bay Bridge. A custom-cut blue stone reception desk with movement reminiscent of ocean waves helps draw the outside in. Altogether, the design created a lasting impression of a sleek and sophisticated space that capitalized on the views.

Framed external views to the outside remain a highlight of the design throughout. The open office area is positioned along the windows, extending the wellness benefits of natural light to more occupants. Glass-walled interior offices face out across the open workstations with a sightline to the cityscape beyond. In the breakroom, views of the bay are maximized with two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows. The glass separating the breakroom from the office is designed to be reminiscent of the city fog. Throughout the space, there is an intangible warmth that is attributable to the subtle introduction of wood and restrained use of ocean blue hues,” says RMW Architecture & interiors

Technology-focused investment firm Battery Ventures recently hired architecture firm John Lum Architecture to design their new headquarters in San Francisco, California.

“Having outgrown their seventh story penthouse in the middle of the city’s SoMa district, Battery Ventures leased the entire sixth floor, expanding their operations to accommodate an evolving staff and customer base. For their new suite, they sought a progressive workspace that would allow for flexibility, and align with their collaborative corporate culture. To appeal to the firm’s clientele, which ranges from entrepreneurs to blue chips, JLA drew inspiration from midcentury-modern influences, using upbeat color palettes to counterbalance any concern that this is a traditional VC firm.

“The challenge was to design a financial office that didn’t feel stuffy and still conveyed authority. It also had to function for the staff’s daily needs,” said Khoan Duong, principal at JLA. “Our approach was to convert the finished space into a vibrant, agile working environment that references their existing suite above, but with a unique twist”.

In order to nurture the company’s people-centered culture and appeal to its multi-generational workforce, JLA organized the floor into two sections: An open social gathering space and a private, residential-scaled office zone. At the center of the social area is the food center which is called out by its unusual serrated cerulean oval cladding. Inside is a snack bar; a standard in SoMa offices, with adjunct kitchen and pantry. Crimson bar chairs and a slated wood ceiling add flair. The nook spills onto a flex area that is intended to foster collaboration. Veering from a one-size-fits-all model, clever use of space, seating clusters, and communal tables, offer ample desking options for the laptop set. Adding a touch of Madmen play, restrooms boast bold tiled walls, and either a hot pink/brown or blue/brown color way.

For focused work and discreet interactions, the private section sets a hushed tone using golden-hued carpet, white walls, and rich wood accents. Executive offices perimeter the windowed exteriors, with random glazed bays providing a varied landscape along the corridor. The core is surrounded by interior banks of offices, wrapped in walnut screens, allowing daylight to penetrate into the normally dark interiors. The rhythm of the brass-colored entry portal adds a sense of solidity and strength, while providing a clear sight of view to reception. Defined by an area rug and mid-century furniture, this space welcomes visitors and employees alike, setting the right balance between hip and traditional.”

Non-profit organization Kiva recently hired workplace design firm Uneebo to design their new office in San Francisco, California.

“Our primary focus with Kiva’s interior design was establishing an open-plan office that enabled Kiva’s employees to feel both comfortable and productive in their working routine. We focused on leveraging the abundance of natural light that was present on each side of their expansive 10,000 square foot office space by strategically positioning relaxation, dining tables, and team huddle areas near the beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows for Kiva’s team to enjoy the sunlight throughout the day.

Partnering closely with Kiva’s management team, our office interior designer Ashly made a point of incorporating as many elements that could bring a sense of nature and serenity into the office design, including a beautiful huge faux living wall that expands across the entire main work station area for Kiva’s team to feel relaxed. Other natural elements of the office design were used through the careful selection of iconic California boho furniture and decor pieces including a beautiful large oak wooden coffee table to ensure Kiva’s employees feel they are connected with nature every day.

As you enter Kiva’s office space employees and guests are greeted with a welcoming and prominent reception area that includes a beautiful handmade wooden reception desk (that traveled over 2,000 miles to get to San Francisco!) situated under Kiva’s bold and iconic green logo to remind everyone that enters of Kiva’s culture and mission statement.

One of the key requirements for Kiva was making sure there were enough areas for productive team collaboration but also enough private space for important conferences, Zoom meetings, and calls. With this in mind we hand-picked the best office furniture on the market including soundproof phone booths, enclosed canopy soft seating for privacy, and collaborative semi-circular conference tables to ensure that Kiva’s space was as equally productive as it was creative. Not forgetting a private space for Kiva’s CEO which includes a custom conference table and beautiful executive office desk.

Overall we are delighted how Kiva’s San Francisco Headquarters turned out and in the light of a post-pandemic world we are proud to have designed an open office which not only enables social distancing given our open plan floor plan but also a creative office space that can encourage employees to come back to the office and collaborate once again,” says Uneebo.

Startup studio Wilbur Labs recently hired architecture firm Huntsman Architectural Group to design their new office in San Francisco, California.

“We needed a uniquely-designed workspace to support our bold vision and portfolio of growing teams. We work across a wide range of industries to create new companies solving problems for millions of people. As we look toward building dozens of startups in the coming years, we recognize that each of our portfolio companies will require a space tailored to their individual needs. Just as the Wright brothers envisioned building something entirely new, our team at Wilbur Labs had a vision of exactly what we needed, even if it didn’t exist yet.
Three crucial themes drove the design of our new HQ: multi-company support, consideration of both onsite and distributed teams, and employee health and wellness.

Multi-company support was something we needed to ensure that several growing companies could all sit under one roof. The new HQ allows us to book conference rooms across multiple domains, while our modular workstations and seating layouts allow us to easily update for high- growth teams. Crucial information for each startup in our portfolio is now front and center with dashboard displays, strategically located throughout the space, allowing our team to monitor performance metrics at all times.

We designed conference rooms for people on both sides of the screen by considering things like camera placement that’s strategically located at eye-level so remote callers have a virtual seat at the table, superior microphone systems, and building materials that absorb sound echo. We also made sure that visiting team members could feel right at home by offering plenty of extra desk space and a cloud-based entry system.

The third theme at our new Wilbur Labs HQ was to prioritize employee health and wellness. The space was designed to maximize natural light; a proven mood booster. Employees enjoy near- perfect air quality, thanks to commercial grade air filters that regularly clean and recirculate air. Motorized sit-stand desks, ergonomic chairs, standing mats, and more ensure that every team member feels their best. We intentionally selected a fantastic central office location near the San Francisco Embarcadero to encourage walking, making it easy for employees to get out and enjoy the city. This prime location provides for stunning views of the bay from our conference rooms and throughout the office.

In addition to all the above, we know how important it is to offer the teams ample private and communal spaces. We have sound-proof phone booths and built-in smart film on conference room glass walls to allow for privacy when needed, while the café style kitchen and all-hands meeting space make gathering and collaboration a daily occurrence,” says Wilbur Labs.

Biotechnology-focused investment firm EcoR1 Capital recently hired interior design studio IDF Studio to design their new office in San Francisco, California.

“The main goal during the design process was to convert a historical residence into a modern office space. The original exposed brick walls and wide plank wood floors were maintained, while a reception area was added, and the bedrooms were converted into a reading room and gym.

The updated floor plan and redesign brought this 1910 SoMa loft forward nearly 100 years, inspiring innovation and vision even further into the future,” says IDF Studio.

“IDF Studio was hired to bring sophistication and panache to this cutting-edge investment firm, located in the idyllic grounds of the Presidio in San Francisco. In partnership with McGriff Architects, our team reconfigured the existing layout by opening up walls and installing glass throughout to maximize natural light.

Replete with soft new lighting and custom tables, the office is now filled with comfortable, inspiring places for collaboration and heads-down work time, including a library-esque incubator, quiet phone rooms, cush upholstered booths, and artful homages to pioneers in science and agriculture.”

Software as a service company LiveRamp recently hired interior design firm Studio O+A to design their new headquarters in San Francisco’s Financial District.

“Working closely with LiveRamp’s team, O+A designers employed color as a practical orientation aid and more keenly as an expression of the company’s youthful spirit. Robust color and bold graphics were a client must. “We don’t usually have clients tell us, ‘I don’t want it to be boring,’” says O+A Design Director Joseph Rodriguez. LiveRamp took a specific interest in the refinements of O+A’s color choices: not a neon yellow; but something with an earthy tone to it. Not just any green, but a green with meaning particular to LiveRamp.

This Way to the Lounge

The U-shaped footprint of LiveRamp’s space consistently made wayfinding a challenge. O+A’s orientation solutions include an intuitive color scheme tied to the circadian rhythms of the day. The east wing of the office (where the sun rises) is cast in warm tones, while the west wing (where the sun sets and evening arrives) features cool colors. For those with no sense of geographical or solar direction, floor graphics make the way forward playfully literal.

All Together Now

When you design for a client’s growth over a series of floors and a period of years, what you learn about the design aligns with what the client learns about its business. O+A’s initial work for LiveRamp embraced the raw energy of the company’s beginnings and the “Swiss Army Knife” utility of its workplace philosophy. The new design provides a more fully integrated environment for a maturing, but still growing company. Better circulation, better space alignment, a more versatile range of work options—the new floor, in partnership with the previous, conveys the energy and optimism of a confident LiveRamp on its way to new discoveries—and a prosperous future.”

A team of architects and designers from architectural firm Feldman Architecture recently designed a new office space for private financial firm, located in Salesforce Tower office building in San Francisco, California.

“In the heart of downtown San Francisco, the Salesforce tower represents the pinnacle of Bay Area technological innovation and modern creativity. We were tasked to create, alongside our client, a west coast headquarters for their global financial firm in the heart of the tower – translating our designers’ residential sensibilities into the workplace, and allowing our clients to uniquely define a space that will become their home away from home for years to come.

Perched above the 50th floor and soaring past the silhouettes of the surrounding high rises and iconic SF fog, the untouched 10,000-sf space set the tone for the design aspirations of the project. Our team looked to create a workplace that reflected our client’s ethos as well as the cultural ethos of the Bay Area – current, yet timeless; modern, yet warm and inviting. The plan aimed to integrate residential design into the tower- a living room, private nooks, and a kitchen help rethink the flow and functionality of the office, and emphasize the personal and human aspects of workplace design.

The anchor of the space is a gently curving wood wrapped core, which shapes the office’s circulation and houses private meeting rooms and the kitchen. The entirely transparent office perimeter sits in contrast with the solid wrapped core- the simplicity of the plan diagram paired well with the clean, restrained, warm material palette, often found in our homes, that captures the aesthetic sensibility of the client.

The furnishings and detailing are soft and light, accented by touches of oak, dark metal, and saddle leather. This play on materials is detailed even in the door frames and hardware, which are a delicate combination of black textured metal, oak, and leather wrapped metal. Functionally, the wood detailing at the door helps to improve the acoustic performance of the glass doors, while aesthetically lending the extra layer of materiality and sense of craft throughout the space.

Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed into the Sky Lounge, the “hearth space” and social core of the office- punctuated by floor to ceiling windows providing views of downtown, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the Pacific Ocean. Natural light floods into the central lounge, which flows into open collaborative areas spread along the rim of the space, ranging from flexible workspaces to a series of small private offices. This work flow strives to strike the balance between shared spaces conducive to collaboration and individual work nooks fostering contemplative focus.

In the living room, sofas arc to create a variety of spaces to meet and relax. Ringed light fixtures suspended overhead mimic curved seating areas below, while round coffee and side tables complete the scene. The large conference room is also a prominent feature of the perimeter, fit with three glass walls. Like a home, the plan creates a gradient from open gathering spaces to private retreats, and maintains casual public lounges accessible to all employees and clients,” says Feldman Architecture.
