A team of designers from interior design firm Maike Design recently designed a new office for business studio Studio Sisu.

“The 1930’s warehouse shell has been transformed into a bright and inspiring creative work space. Providing different zones of use throughout offers the flexibility required for both collaborative work and individual creative exploration whilst retaining the original building’s sense of scale.

Studio Sisu is designed to address the physical limitations and isolation of an industry fractured by small studio business models. It brings together complimentary businesses to create opportunities for discussion and interaction amongst peers. Encouraging creative collaboration of ideas and skills creates an environment otherwise inaccessible to small businesses or individual practitioners.

Using a mixture of high and low cost materials, furniture and fittings has allowed the design to create a highly crafted and unique environment within the specified budget. The inclusion of refurbished antique furniture and fittings allows the new building work to sit comfortably alongside the existing factory structure.

The design of the new interventions and custom designed furniture, uses a simple materials palette accentuating the highly tactile surfaces of the original building.

The new entry pulls back from the street and softens the solidity of the building, providing the studio with a distinctive presence within its laneway context. The entry doors emphasise the height of the space and their offset placement directs visitors to the office without the need for a formal reception.

The ground level is a flexible, shared space allowing for large-scale projects or workshops not usually catered for in an office environment. Amenities on this level leave the entire upper level free from any solid visual interruptions.

The upper level office uses a simple palette to accentuate the highly tactile surfaces of the original building. Strategic use of screening and joinery creates distinct zones whilst retaining the sense of volume which made the original shell such a unique and appealing space,” says

A team of architects and designers from architecture firm FMD Architects designed a new office for private law firm in Melbourne, Australia.

“Nestled within the busy urban landscape, QC Chambers operates as a quiet space of contemplation for a QC within the Melbourne CBD. Functioning as a workplace and meeting place, it is also a space to contemplate, a moment of respite from the daily happenings of the court – an opportunity to recharge and think ahead of the next case.

The Chambers pivot around an artwork, Plate Glass 2, by Melbourne artist Sam Shmith. The urban train scene expressed, reinterprets the views out to the skyline beyond. Black tones throughout the space and lighting by Christopher Boots continue the dialogue with the artwork, offering shifting perspectives of the art, the chambers, and the city itself. A space which provides ongoing contemplation and inspiration.

Tasmanian Oak veneer joinery mimics the city skyline and extends from the deep green carpet, counterbalancing the dark tones, and housing the necessities of the working chambers. A meeting table in the centre of the room greets guests, while a Churchill inspired standing desk on the far wall grants opportunities to work throughout the chambers. QC Chambers reinterprets the traditional urban life of a barrister, expressing it in a contemporary way,” says FMD Architects.

Coffee machine manufacturer recently hired interior design firm Native Design Workshop to design their new office in Melbourne, Australia.

“The VA Experience Lab’ is the new home for internationally renowned coffee machine company, Victoria Arduino in Australia. This space is a workspace for the company’s team, as well as a place where industry professionals can gather, view, test and learn how to use the coffee machines, while also gaining an understanding of the products and their origins. Furthermore, the Experience Lab will act as a training ground for some of the best baristas in the world when preparing for competition.

With such a small floorplate to respond to the numerous programmatic requirements, we had to consolidate ideas and go away from compartmentalising function, which was given as a directive from some of the stakeholders. Instead, we opted for an approach that embraces the modern workspace and allows for the people of Brunswick to actually see what goes on in the space, which is what the actual occupants of this space wanted, to become a part of the community and not just another business that turns its back on the street. With this mindset, we built upon a very Melbourne approach to the coffee game and took the idea of the ‘hole in the wall’ coffee shop to another level,” says Native Design Workshop.

Architecture firm Adam Kane Architects recently moved into a new office in Melbourne, Australia, which they designed themselves.

“The inspiring new workspace is complemented by a number of custom made fittings and furniture pieces, creating a unique office that provides a glimpse into the future direction for the practice.

Brooding and elegant, the use of a rich grey hue in the architraves, ceiling and walls is cleverly contrasted by the abundance of natural light that floods the space.
On the ground floor, a small powder rooms sits next to a narrow staircase, discreetly hidden by a large, unassuming pivot door.

On the first floor, there is a subtle separation between the meeting room and main workspace, with a transition in floor levels ensuring that the spaces are kept individual. Custom steel-framed doors that stretch 3.6m high from floor to ceiling also allow the spaces to be closed off entirely, bringing flexibility to the office as a whole.

The bronze joinery ‘block’ is a feature of the workspace, creating a bold focal point that cleverly divides the formal and informal zones of the space. Clad in panels of custom dipped bronze, the block provides an everchanging play of light across its patinaed surface whilst concealing the kitchenette and sample library on its reverse.

The purposeful layering of grey provides a soothing backdrop to the office, allowing a collection of custom pieces to be accentuated, including a five-metre long, timber-veneer desk purpose built in it’s place. Another custom feature is a marble table supported by three polished plaster ‘pillars’, providing a place to gather and collaborate in the corner. Whilst the stone offcuts from the tabletop were used to create a secondary side table.”

A team of designers from architectural firmn Gray Puksand recently designed a new office for private financial company in Melbourne, Australia.

“The intent was to deliver an interior exuding a sense of calm and balance that essentially functions as a yin to the yang of the often high-intensity business. In order to do so, the project team employed the principles of biophilic design throughout, incorporating natural materials, neutral colours and patterns reminiscent of nature.

The design’s driving concept is underpinned by themes of fluidity, growth and solid foundations. These interconnected ideas are expressed as strong spatial and architectural elements, beginning at the entry, with a generous reception area that welcomes visitors. Beyond its organically shaped desk is the sculptural stair, which connects all four levels. This dramatic structure visually anchors the fit-out, while around it, different settings allow employees to choose how they want to work by offering zones for collaboration alongside intimate areas for quiet retreat.

Key to the overall design is the Green House, an informal meeting space that allows employees to gather in small to medium groups. While a variety of modern furniture in pastel blue, pistachio green and warm ochre characterises this area, it’s defined by a striking ceiling feature that recalls rippling water. This is adjacent to the Wintergarden, which boasts a double-height space and abundant plantings. Panoramic views of the north of the city further extend the connection to nature, as does the natural stone flooring, timber detailing and subtle textures of the fabric upholstery.

Soft edges and curves dominate the design, from the wide non-linear circulation paths that carve out each floor’s plan to the pendant lighting and amorphously shaped rugs. Even the glass-enclosed boardroom, centrally placed to symbolise an opportunity to ‘meet in the middle’ when resolving disputes, doesn’t have any sharp corners. The fit-out’s forms and shapes come together to represent nature’s ebbs and flows, which have ultimately settled in place to provide a relaxed, comfortable workplace,” says Gray Puksand.

Private business company recently hired interior design firm Tandem Design Studio to design their new office in Melbourne, Australia.

“Our brief was to create a working environment that encouraged interaction and engagement between employees. It was also required to be flexible in order to support the dynamic formation and disbandment of project teams that are critical to effective supply chain management. Creating a generous and welcoming workplace reflective of the familial and social culture of the business was also an important aspect of the brief. Arranged over 4 storeys, each level of the building is connected by a central stairway, each offset from the one before, increasing the visual and physical connection between levels.

Food is both core business and central to the culture at Scalzo Foods. It, therefore, occupies a central place in the building. A highly visible glass wrapped kitchen laboratory is located adjacent to the stairway on the first floor. It is here that new food products are developed and tested. The laboratory acts as a showpiece for employees and visitors alike, signalling a culture of innovation that has been critical to the success and identity of the business.

Equally, a large employee lunchroom incorporating a lounge and substantial terrace is situated in a prime location of the building on level 2, overlooking the Maribyrnong River Reserve.

The predominantly open plan office space is designed for maximum flexibility to support teams focussed approach to operations. The open areas are supported by multiple dedicated meeting rooms. Informal break out space is woven throughout each level of the building, providing many settings for collaborating on-the-go. The architectural concept integrates the adaptive reuse of an existing warehouse at the Kensington Road edge of the site via a semi-transparent link at ground level. It was important to the client to both retain some of the site’s industrial heritage and character and to make provision for future activation of the streetscape – it is envisioned to eventually be leased to a cafe operator.

The building creates a series of transitions in response to context – from industrial to commercial and ending in a series of open ended volumes that respond in scale and texture to the railyards

The facade of the new building was inspired by a stroboscope – a visual device that’s animated by motion, often used in old style vinyl turntables to register speed. This has the effect of animating the building’s exterior and ambiguity reading the interior volumes when viewed from a passing car or from a train on the neighbouring tracks. It’s also a metaphor for the way this modern office is capable of rapidly responding to the needs of its occupants.

With its animated black and white facade emerging from a sea of rusted industrial buildings as it now does, it is a signal that change is coming.”

National broadcaster ABC Melbourne recently hired architecture & interior design firm Cox Architecture to design their new headquarters in Melbourne, Australia.

“As the National Broadcaster, the ABC is a vital public institution integral to the social, cultural and political life of the city, state and nation. Occupying a key Southbank site, the ABC building forms part of a dynamic cultural, arts and education precinct which has reshaped the strategic inner-city area and become a focus for an increasing program of events and public activities.

The design of the new building reflected the broadcaster’s intention to consolidate all Melbourne operations under one roof by re-purposing their existing Southbank building to create a unified, integrated and collaborative professional environment in a functionally efficient and contemporary setting.

The design enabled increased opportunity for knowledge sharing and inter-divisional collaboration, positioning the ABC to better respond to an ever-changing media landscape from a workplace that offers a dynamic, integrated and visually-transparent environment while also promoting interaction across program teams, and inviting greater public interest and participation in programs and special events.

Generous floor plates and regular vertical connections support exceptional workplace integration, a campus style workplace, and ground floor that has been developed as an integrated extension of the wider urban context. Sustainability and energy efficiency measures include water conservation, passive solar shading, high efficiency glazing, room occupancy sensors and a comprehensive digital building management system, while roof gardens, verandahs and winter gardens ensure optimal levels of fresh air and light,” says Cox Architecture.

Creative agency Cornwell recently hired interior design firm Kestie Lane Studio to design their new office in Melbourne, Australia.

“Following on from the original Cornwell office, designing a space for collaboration and creative expression was once again the focus. The new space called for a more contemporary style with a minimal and clean line aesthetic.

Approaching the long and expansive space with a very minimal style posed the risk of the space lacking the creative expression that is our client’s brand. As designers, our challenge was to inject the space with bold elements and statement pieces which are heored by the simple backdrop.By creating a strong focal point at the end of a long hallway, the eye is drawn into the communal space. As the theme of the space is very monolithic and sleek, these moments of surprise are key for creating points of interest and personality. The inhabitant is then drawn into a space which encourages a sense of community and interaction.

The expansive site allowed for a very social and open plan office space. The hero of the interior is the communal kitchen and meeting area featuring a large meeting table extending the length of the space. This area allows for Cornwell’s creatives to interact and collaborate in a social and work setting.

In true Cornwell style, the graphic stone bench is a bold element of surprise. The simplicity of the white walls and polished concrete which surrounds allows for the monochromatic graphic pattern to be the statement. Amongst the paired back colour palette are outbreaks of deep purple and blue, a nod to Cornwell 1.0. The space has many sculptural moments. Stone artifacts and steel frame floor to ceiling planters are showcased as pieces of art amongst a minimal and sleek canvas,” says Kestie Lane Studio.

Architecture and interior design firm Plus Architecture recently designed itself a new office in Melbourne, Australia.

“The re-invigoration of this boutique, heritage building initially saw the restoration of the base build to enable the space to once again become commercially viable. The original ceilings and floors were exposed throughout, bringing this beautiful old building’s personality to the fore once again.

The original brick walls were rediscovered, and the heritage wooden floors were restored throughout the space. Ink stains and vault marks on the floors were left in place as a reminder of the building’s interesting transition from printing factory to bank vault to design studio. The original lift shaft was reconfigured as an impressive new staircase, illuminated from above by a cleverly placed skylight.

The crisp material palette of tone on tone allows the original features of the building to sing – bringing a unique character to the space. The designers were mindful not to cover even perhaps the less desirable features of what was once a derelict building, choosing to celebrate them instead. Marks and graffiti on the walls from previous lives was retained, where appropriate, bringing moments of reflection and reminiscence for the working spaces of the past to this otherwise fully contemporary studio space.

A tribute to the many graffiti tags that once covered the walls, Plus chose to use this art form, also synonymous with the Melbourne-locale, as inspiration for the reception backdrop. The use of graffiti was juxtaposed with the seriousness and solidity of the custom designed reception desk – delivering a space that is truly unique and brave, unchartered design territory for a serious and professional design studio. Created by Melbourne-artist, RESIO, the display brings a surprising pop of colour to an otherwise minimalist, sophisticated space.

Adding a further touch of whimsicality and playfulness to the design, the naming of each meeting room was inspired by the many graffiti tags covering the walls when the designers first visited the empty, unloved space. Another room, aptly named ‘Pigeon’, pays homage to the building’s main occupants immediately prior to Plus,” says Plus Architecture.

Dietary supplements manufacturer Orchard Manufacturing recently hired architecture firm BENT Architecture to design their new office in Melbourne, Australia.

“The brief for this project was to create an innovative and engaging workplace that would not only meet the practical needs of a new production facility for Orchard Manufacturing but would also reflect the natural origins of the company.

Orchard Manufacturing is a national health company specialising in the production of fruit-based laxatives. Practically, the brief called for a series production and administrative spaces that would typically be quite separate in this type of building – sometimes in completely different buildings on other sides of the city. Our approach was to integrate and, where possible, overlap these functions in order to create a cohesive working environment, where employees from different parts of the company were brought together as one.

The creation of an inspiring work environment that represented the natural ethos of the company was an essential part of the brief. The existing building was adjacent to a nature reserve, yet there was no interaction or relationship between the industrial building and its natural landscape. Incorporating the natural landscape in an interior environment that is, by necessity, sterile is problematic. Our approach was to take the spirit of the surrounding natural world and weave it through the interior of the existing warehouse shell, using colour, texture and organic forms to create an uplifting and exciting space, bringing a smile to employee’s and visitor’s faces alike.

Beyond the passive design principles we incorporate into every project, this project was all about social sustainability: creating a sustainable workplace by connecting people to light and natural materials.

Large windows within the walls of the production areas create visual connections to other parts of the facility and allow natural light to filter through from roof lights in the warehouse. Of course, this reduces the need for artificial lighting, but importantly gives employees (particularly shift workers) a connection to the natural rhythms of day and night, improving the health and well-being of staff.

The design also aims to break down hierarchies and give everyone a sense of belonging to the one company. Flows established in linework and decorative expression reinforce the connection between the different parts of the organisation. The production area in this scenario is the spiral referred to in Hundterwasser’s quote; the point where the products are created. The journey through the interior spaces culminates in this via the elevated walkway, ” says BENT Architecture.
