Financial institution Glenhawk recently hired workplace design firm Peldon Rose to design their new office in London, England.

“When it came to creating an office for leading financial lender, Glenhawk, workplace design and build experts Peldon Rose were faced with the task of adapting an initial concept design to deliver a flexible workplace which brings the company’s values of honesty, passion and quality service to life – all in just four weeks.

Glenhawk wanted an office environment that reflects its modern approach to financial lending, and one which will allow its team to grow comfortably. The disjointed nature of the company’s previous office highlighted the need for a diverse, yet connected, space. Aiming to move away from a corporate feel and towards a people-focused environment, Glenhawk needed a complete change in approach.

The Peldon Rose team worked closely with Glenhawk to breathe life into the initial concept design and fostered a strong working relationship with the client from the outset. This allowed the team to easily utilise the existing design to create an open plan layout that promotes interaction and collaboration across teams.

It was important that employee wellbeing was considered first and foremost. The Covid-19 pandemic has amplified the importance of keeping teams well, both physically and mentally, and the office space has a key part to play. The new location overlooks a courtyard, which means it is rich in natural light. Such an abundance of light can be a rarity in London office spaces, so every effort was made to maximise its impact.

Peldon Rose adopted the principles of biophilic design across the workplace and introduced a range of plants that will thrive in the beautifully lit space. These are complemented by the use of natural textures and the introduction of a wellbeing room with soft furnishings to create a calm space for employees to concentrate or recuperate.

The future use of space was also a really important factor in the design. As a growing company, Glenhawk needed an office that could flex and adapt. The main area allows for this growth thanks to the incorporation of break-out facilities and social spaces, while additional meeting rooms have been designed to have a multifunctional purpose. Acoustic treatments provide privacy for client meetings, but also create an area for social functions or large team meetings,” says Peldon Rose.

Technology company Infosys recently hired workplace design firm Area to design their new office in London, England.

“Infosys are expecting to double their growth in 2022, with plans to hire over 1,000 workers in the UK over the next three years as part of their commitment to support the economic recovery and growth. Infosys required a space that is adaptable to their expansion and following an acquisition spree in recent years, it was the perfect opportunity for change.

Working in collaboration with project managers Mace, our design concept needed to reflect innovation, collaboration and community. With Infosys joining creative subsidiary brand Wongdoody under the same roof, their new workplace needed to strengthen the connection between teams, creating a vibrant and social environment.

With an aspiration to encourage more collaboration across departments and promote a greater sense of community, our design team evolved existing spaces and developed four key areas throughout: Ideation Areas, for people to come together and discuss initial ideas and concepts; Living Labs, to support the development process; Townhall Space, including a 50-seat auditorium; and an Energy Innovation Hub, with meeting lounge, breakout space and client suite.

With a mission to support regional designers and innovators, bespoke furniture and fittings were sourced locally and London based graffiti artist Matt Thomas (Indelible) was commissioned to create a personalised mural, illustrating Infosys’ brand values of sustainability, inclusivity and resilience. Employee experience is also supported within the design with bold use of biophilic elements and considered placement of furniture and joinery elements to make best use of the space. Open plan work zones, focus spaces and breakout areas have been arranged to maximise natural light and showcase the vibrant views of Shoreditch.

A key driver for this project was the delivery in accordance with strict sustainability principles. Energy usage has been reduced through the implementation of efficient lighting, passive infrared sensors and optimised lighting controls. Additionally, sustainable and locally sourced materials have been used throughout the scheme, including environmentally efficient flooring and wall coverings, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) joinery and timber, as well as low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints. During the construction phase, over 98% of waste was diverted from landfill. These efforts throughout the design and construction phase have resulted in the project achieving a Ska Gold accreditation.”

Investment company UAC recently hired office design firm Micdee to design their new office in Lagos, Nigeria.

“Based on a series of strategy sessions with the client, we primarily discovered that they needed a Brand Environment Design that pays homage to the legacy the Brand has built over 120 years but also matched a vision of an evolved and progressive UAC. We realized that the existing workspace had become outdated both in appearance and user experience. It was no surprise then that our design exploration with the end users of the space revealed a dip in staff efficiency and productivity.

Our design process was aimed at creating inspiring, notable experiences for all stakeholders; staff and visitors alike that reflected a modern, clean aesthetic in tune with the needs of a 21st century workspace. We opted for a minimalist outlook that employed the use of neutral hues of colors for walls, floors and ceilings to evoke a sense of modernism. Emphasis was placed on aligning meeting rooms and open offices along the south side of the building overlooking the Lagos Marina. We also incorporated biophilic design elements into the space through built-in desk planters and inclusion of natural wood.

The triumph of this project is marked more by the seamless integration of the new workspace environment with the overall vision of the client than by anything else,” says Micdee.

Management consulting company Sia Partners recently hired workplace design firm Oktra to design their new office in London, England.

“Beginning with a creative, workshop-based approach, we set out on a journey towards a sleek workspace in a neutral colour palette, highlighted in sophisticated tones of blush, mint, and sage, with improved variety in meeting and amenity spaces, as well as an increased focus on wellbeing.

Marmoleum sheet vinyl made from 97% natural raw materials supports the working spaces on the fifth floor in a nod to the building’s history as a linoleum warehouse, while high-backed single sofas facing the outer glazing, and desks arranged around the outside of the building with a teapoint in the centre, ensure that natural light falls where it’s most needed. Flexibility and agility are prioritised, especially in the boardroom’s adjustable wall partition.

Sia Partners’ workspace stretches out over two floors of their building: we ensured that the fifth floor’s wine bar, terrace, and bright meeting rooms would provide the perfect environment to introduce visitors to the views of the city rooftop landscapes, while the fourth floor is built to support their teams in daily tasks. With a wellness room, and stand-out biophilia features like an indoor tree in the heart of the office, both floors support the same high-quality user experience,” says Oktra.

Architecture firm SGKS Architects moved into a new office in Abbotsford, Australia which they designed themselves.

“Our objective with this project was to create a new home for our second-generation architectural practice – a contemporary studio space that would reflect the practice’s heritage and grow with it in the future.

Located alongside the Yarra on a prominent Victoria Street site, the 135-square-metre office occupies a ground-floor tenancy of the Sanctuary apartment development. Bold geometry and honest materials create a masculine aesthetic. Raw concrete floors and columns contrast with timber-battened ceiling panels, while trailing greenery softens the hard edges. Frameless glass panels play with ideas of openness and enclosure, ensuring visual connections throughout the space while maintaining privacy where it’s needed.

Banks of smart desks provide a flexible open-plan layout – they can be reconfigured from meeting tables to individual work stations as the team evolves. The craft of making buildings has always been central to the firm’s ethos, so space for founder Peter Sgourakis’s hand drafting was accommodated in the design. Custom storage was installed, along with mobile pinboards to display work in progress. A well-loved print of Portofino from the original studio recalls the practice’s 40-year history.

The studio’s trademark crosshair motif is embedded in the design, creating a subtly branded interior. It appears as a window decal and again in the custom shelving unit suspended from a concrete pillar. Designed by director Henry Sgourakis, this finely detailed unit celebrates its own construction, with unpolished welds and a lustrous patina. Elsewhere, streamlined furniture from Space and Arthur G finishes the interior,” says SGKS Studio.

Travel company Black Rabbit recently hired interior architecture firm EN Design Studio to design their new office in Tel Aviv, Israel.

“Our goal was to create a sense of multiculturalism, accessibility, and a shared community vibe. Part of our process revealed the client’s wish for various elements, such as work areas, different types of meeting rooms, main cafeteria and supporting spaces around the office. To maximize the space, we planned corridors that contained elements such as storage cabinets, desks, and benches, which creates an active space with blurred boundaries and multiple possibilities for movement and work.

We wanted to infuse several key elements in the design, such as nature, exteriors, globality, and simplicity. The office has a layout that resembles the anatomy of a tree with branches. It has a public center “cube” at the core and work areas all around it, this allows movements and activities to easily flow and circulate in all directions.

The main central “cube” combines five meeting rooms of different types, which support collaborative work among employees. There are two informal meeting rooms styled as a cozy home lounge, a private telephone booth and lockers for personal storage and two conference rooms for group meetings.

The outdoor and global atmosphere is expressed through the choice of materials and a colorful palette. The main flooring is a unique terrazzo tile that runs throughout the office, and in the work areas we choose warm wood parquet planks. The use of a few bright colors allows the natural materials and the rich graphic elements to stand out, and emphasize the sense of exteriors and a multicultural environment. One of the areas that were important to the client was the cafeteria, the company wanted a central gathering place for the employees. We were tasked with creating a multi-functional space with mixed-use options, from communal dining at lunchtime to company-wide gatherings and events. For example, the main bar is often used for company meetings despite being central and open.

Other solutions that helped us create a pleasant and homogeneous space were the use of bright colors in the work areas, including the ceilings and Building systems, chairs, as well as hanging semi-partitions alongside the work stations. The success of this project as we see it, is that although the space is relatively small and contains multiple work functions, the quality of the work environment is not compromised. It provides diverse work options, from intimate workspaces to large meeting areas,” says EN Design Studio.

A team of designers from architectural firmn Gray Puksand recently designed a new office for private financial company in Melbourne, Australia.

“The intent was to deliver an interior exuding a sense of calm and balance that essentially functions as a yin to the yang of the often high-intensity business. In order to do so, the project team employed the principles of biophilic design throughout, incorporating natural materials, neutral colours and patterns reminiscent of nature.

The design’s driving concept is underpinned by themes of fluidity, growth and solid foundations. These interconnected ideas are expressed as strong spatial and architectural elements, beginning at the entry, with a generous reception area that welcomes visitors. Beyond its organically shaped desk is the sculptural stair, which connects all four levels. This dramatic structure visually anchors the fit-out, while around it, different settings allow employees to choose how they want to work by offering zones for collaboration alongside intimate areas for quiet retreat.

Key to the overall design is the Green House, an informal meeting space that allows employees to gather in small to medium groups. While a variety of modern furniture in pastel blue, pistachio green and warm ochre characterises this area, it’s defined by a striking ceiling feature that recalls rippling water. This is adjacent to the Wintergarden, which boasts a double-height space and abundant plantings. Panoramic views of the north of the city further extend the connection to nature, as does the natural stone flooring, timber detailing and subtle textures of the fabric upholstery.

Soft edges and curves dominate the design, from the wide non-linear circulation paths that carve out each floor’s plan to the pendant lighting and amorphously shaped rugs. Even the glass-enclosed boardroom, centrally placed to symbolise an opportunity to ‘meet in the middle’ when resolving disputes, doesn’t have any sharp corners. The fit-out’s forms and shapes come together to represent nature’s ebbs and flows, which have ultimately settled in place to provide a relaxed, comfortable workplace,” says Gray Puksand.

Ecommerce company Alza recently moved into a new headquarters in Prague, Czech Republic, which they designed themselves.

“The employees now have an area of over 10,000 square meters that provides a large café for meeting other colleagues, a green space full of live plants, and share desks, and 42 meeting spaces. One of them is located inside the fully reconstructed 1960 Saviem van. To make it functional Alza employees devoted tens of hours of their free time to its restoration.

The central space, which will eventually be used for meetings of larger groups of employees with a massive presentation, is dominated by a café. It provides a space for informal meetings of employees and their guests. Thanks to the prepared facilities, it will be possible to provide a wider range of cold and hot snacks here once the pandemic situation improves.

Lots of energy was also put into the creation of various spaces for cooperation, both meeting rooms and shared workplaces in the spirit of coworking. A fully renovated second floor now offers 27 new meeting rooms, each of them furnished in a different style, Zen-style included”, says Jan Moudrik from Alza.

Marketing software company ActiveCampaign recently hired architecture & interior design firm Eastlake Studio to design their new office expansion in Chicago, Illinois.

“ActiveCampaign has grown exponentially over the last few years, opening offices on three other continents, and reaching their maximum capacity in the Loop. An open floor below their headquarters, which we completed in 2017, gave us the opportunity to expand their original space without displacing their roots.

In the first design phase, the full-floor suite in 1 North Dearborn emphasized ActiveCampaign’s employee-centric culture, with numerous gathering areas, impactful branding, and memorable spaces. Leadership guided the open plan to be free from hierarchy, so much so that even the CEO sits among staff. Lounges and quiet areas are free to be used as workspace, giving everyone a choice of how and where to work. Small huddle rooms, named after fictional locations by the staff, celebrate a collective love of science fiction and fantasy pop culture. Hidden in the game room behind a revolving bookcase, a secret meeting area also communicates the playful tone carried over into the expansion.

The second phase of the project was focused on creating a grand stair as the heart of the office. It forms a dynamic gathering space, expanding the existing communal area, and connecting the two floors. Moss and geometric millwork recall ActiveCampaign’s directional logo, and reflect the bold branding elements at the entrance.

Lit by a customizable marquee sign, a training and screening room was a needed addition for more formal presentations and after hour movie gatherings. A full-service coffee shop now fuels Activecampaign’s busy days, and a library/action figure display room doubles as a theater-inspired happy hour lounge,” says Eastlake Studio.

Charity organization MND Association recently hired workplace design firm Oktra to design their new office in Northampton, England.

“The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association needed one cohesive space on a single floor, in order to better house their teams and improve collaborative working. We began the process by undertaking a two-week long workplace study in order to learn more about how to best support those living with MND and those who care for them.

Embarking on this project with the objective of embodying the MND Association’s values of openness and inclusivity, we built in wheelchair accessibility throughout as a fundamental part of the design. Creating an aesthetic connection between the two wings of the building, we joined the two halves with a storytelling area at the entrance to hold the heart of the space, and from which a variety of focus booths and collaborative workstations fan outwards.

Wellbeing is emphasised throughout in biophilic elements, acoustic considerations and soft furnishings, as well as the use of natural materials. This workplace evokes an engaged, welcoming feel which we hope will help support the teams at the MND Association toward their core ambition of ‘a world free from MND,” says Oktra.

Global broadcaster BBC Studios + BBC Global News recently hired office interior design firm Conexus to design their new office in Singapore.

“As Singapore settles into Phase 3 of reopening, staff working in the country’s BBC outposts can look forward to returning to a new workplace transformed in ways that go much deeper than aesthetics. Located at 18 Robinson, a mixed-development complex in the city’s Central Business District, the new joint office for BBC Studios and BBC Global News was completed in late 2020, after the city’s lockdown during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The space represents a significant move for the two BBC operations in Singapore, shifting away from a fixed desk setup towards a more agile one, as part of the company’s move to modernise its workplace. The new office also reflects the company’s goal of putting employee experience first, by delighting its users while fostering community and productivity.

With these objectives in mind, Conexus Studio developed a series of settings that supported work-style flexibility and kept people and ideas flowing freely across a high-performing workplace. “A strategic mix of formal and informal, and individual and group working spaces in turn inspire, rejuvenate, as well as balance personal productivity with collaboration,” explains Conexus Studios’ design director Aviruth Trungtreechart.

Without a formal reception area, the walkway leading to the new office is a transitional space where Conexus Studio wanted to create an impactful experience that could connect visitors to the BBC’s brand and values. A minimalist signage wall accosts the eyes, followed by a thriving vertical garden, paying homage to the company’s green ethos. As one enters the office, a wall of oversized screens showcasing latest works immerse the visitor in the world of the BBC.

Here, the path splits into two distinct neighbourhoods. To the left, the pantry is the pulsing heart of the office, a fluid and rejuvenating space abuzz with different activities throughout the day. Flexible seating options regularly draw employees to not just work and have meals, but also meet up and socialise at other times. The versatile space combines also easily with the meeting rooms, which open up fully to cater for townhall meetings and screening events of up to 100 people (when social distancing rules do not apply). To the right of the entrance, the back office is sophisticated and restrained, an antithesis to the energetic pantry where productive work thrives amidst awe-inspiring views of neighbouring skyscrapers. Secondary circulation pathways nest restful nooks, offering a retreat from the open environment and bringing respite to a busy day.

Natural textures and motifs drawn from the local context are integrated into the design and give the office a sense of its location. Sketches of Singapore attractions adorn meeting room doors, which double as privacy screens as well as eye-catching wayfinding signages. The interior design also honours the BBC’s commitment to sustainability and highlights a strong connection to nature with a strong use of greenery and natural materials seamlessly integrated throughout the office.”
