Non-profit organization Save the Children recently hired interior design studio Echospace to design their new office in London, England.

“Save the children International is a charity that supports children; transforming their lives through better education, economic opportunities and health care. Their London head office was cluttered, dated and lacked agile areas and storage.

Echospace used Save the Children’s branding to generate a rejuvenated workspace, completely transforming the space; a 3D wall graphic conveying Save the Children’s timeline portrayed a contemporary twist on the traditional way of depicting graphics, multiple agile areas have been designed to create zones where collaborative working and informal meetings can take place. The interior now reflects Save the Children’s ideologies and allows them to work efficiently to transform children’s lives for the better.”

Charity organization MS Society hired workplace design studio Peldon Rose to design their new office in London, England.

“Located opposite Finsbury Park Station, the charity’s new workspace offers an inspiring destination to welcome staff back to the office as restrictions ease and the charity moves to a more flexible way of working.

With a focus on autonomy and wellbeing, the MS Society has adopted an activity-based working style that gives staff the freedom to decide where and how they want to work to suit their individual needs, role and personality. No longer bound by the outdated requirement of providing rows and rows of desks for employees, it was time to create a destination office – one that supports flexible working through a blended mix of settings and promotes greater health and wellbeing. Most importantly, it needed to be somewhere people genuinely want to come, home to lots of different activity-based settings that put significant focus on people and community.”

Political party Liberal Democrats recently hired workplace design firm Peldon Rose to design their new office in London, England.

“The new HQ for the Lib Dems at 1 Vincent Square, lies in the heart of Westminster. Whilst the building is in an impressive location, it was important that this space did not feel too grand or intimidating. It needed to exude a positive energy for everyone who walked through its doors, making them feel welcome and immediately engaged with the party.

Steve Taylor, Project Director at Peldon Rose, commented: “To create this space we needed to really understand the party’s ambitions. Their main goal is very obvious ,that is to achieve electoral success and continue to build on recent local gains – so this office needs to be the beating heart and “mission centre” of their campaigns. As a party that stands for inclusion and fairness, it should be inviting for everyone. A space for ideas to be shared, debates to be held and ultimately success to be celebrated.”

To echo the party’s core values, Peldon Rose opted for an open plan design without any formal barriers to the space. The entry to the office is a large communal space for events and collaboration. People are encouraged to naturally move through the area while at the same time it serves as an agile working space. It is open, transparent and very flexible, providing an elastic and multi-purpose environment.

Peldon Rose were also conscious of ensuring that this space reflected the rich history and roots of the party. Gallery walls were used throughout the office to showcase their achievements, party history and values. Peldon Rose made sure that the whole space supports the party’s future ambitions and strategies. Additionally, panelling was used in the library area, as a nod to the original HQ’s architecture in Cowley Street, creating period charm and a “centre of academia” feel to the space.

The colour palette used across the headquarters is instantly recognisable, with accents of the Liberal Democrats’ signature gold paired with complementary earthy green tones. Gold is associated with compassion, courage and wisdom, whilst green represents growth, harmony and ambition – all of which adhere to the aspirational values of the party.

Natural light floods the entire headquarters to help boost the wellbeing and productivity of those who will use the space. In order to maximise the light, dividing walls were removed to allow better exposure to windows and improve access to the wrap-around terrace and impressive panoramic vistas across Westminster and surrounding areas,” says Peldon Rose.

Environmental law charity organization ClientEarth hired workplace design studio Peldon Rose to design their new office in London, England.

“The project took on a rustic feel and natural materials were utilised in conjunction with a biophilic design to deliver an environment that showcases the very best nature has to offer. The FCS certified, recycled plywood pallet boards used as panelling throughout the office create an impressive entrance that is then continued as you walk through the space.

Even the low VCO level paint selected by Peldon Rose and A+ rated environmentally efficient flooring meets the green seal standards. Additionally, by opting for motion activated LED lighting and energy efficient equipment, the space actively reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions. No stone was left unturned when it came to sourcing environmentally friendly products, helping to achieve the space’s SKA Gold rating for the fit-out.

ClientEarth’s previous office had become run down and offered limited spaces for collaborative working. Having spent long periods away from the office due to lockdown restrictions, the charity’s leadership team recognised the importance of creating a workspace that encouraged employees to come back together – professionally and socially.

ClientEarth wanted to bring people back to an office where teams could meet for lunches and so a long table in the tea point area brought this to life and sits within the heart of the office. A large event area has also been incorporated with the capacity to hold seminars for up to 75, as well as be used as a dining area or breakout space.

As leaders in the climate change movement, the organisation wanted to create somewhere it felt proud to welcome visitors to external events and seminars. Peldon Rose incorporated several elements into the design to ensure this was achieved, such as a reception desk with added wheels so that it can be adapted into a bar for evening functions. Other flexible spaces include a front of house which can also be used as a yoga studio and a wellbeing room which provides a quiet area for employees to use for down time.

In the open plan woodland area near the entrance of the office, planting provides a natural canopy connecting staff with nature whilst undertaking their daily work. The ‘bunker’ provides a place for staff to gather thoughts and ideas, while the passageway through the reception and garden café are flooded with natural light – a welcome reminder of the planet’s natural beauty that drives ClientEarth’s work.

The greenery and planting inside increases occupant connectivity to the natural surroundings while the courtyard area allows teams to spend more time outdoors which is proven to boost mood and productivity. The space features bee houses and bird feeders, encouraging teams to enjoy nature and wildlife.”

German social organization Aktion Mensch recently hired architecture and interior design firm Ippolito Fleitz Group to design their new office in Bonn, Germany.

“Our aim: To create a dynamic work world across 3900 m2 where differences are normal. Meeting the same demands as in the numerous projects that Aktion Mensch supports each month. Making innate values tangible. Creating a place where all emplo- yees feel they belong. To do this, we exploited our strengths as a multidisciplinary design studio to implement inclusion in a modern and sustainable way. While at the same time preser- ving the structural substance of this office building from 2003, because a responsible use of resources is just as important. –– This is how we like to work best: by taking the existing structure into account and working effectively within the given budget. And if everything must be implemented while business opera- tions continue, no problem. Responsibility shows itself best in cooperation.

After reorganising the total floor area into eight zones, work life is organised around a village square that forms the centrepiece of each area. As central meeting places, all village squares have their own theme, from which the colour scheme for the square and the adjacent department is derived. Each colour concept is completed by an individualised ceiling. This always provides a definite answer to the question »Where shall we meet?«: at the festival, the harbour, on the sports field, in the garden, the library or at the market. This not only improves orientation, but strengthens the sense of belonging. Neighbourhoods are culti- vated. At Aktion Mensch, cultural identity is created through real-life diversity. –– If nobody is excluded, then anonymity no longer has any place.

Employee diversity is illustrated in the bold colours of the room elements. Changeable furniture, soft materials and round shapes that are never perfectly round. Each of them is unique, just like the personalities who work here. A joy for life is expressed throughout. Differences are revealed, all of which appear quite normal here. A sense of well-being can be felt at all times. The space tells stories. And the work world is readable for every- one in their own language. –– Lust for life. Desire for diversity. Vibrancy. Diverse, variable, inward leaning, approachable, taking a stance. Equal rights on an equal footing. This is what distinguishes our work world for Aktion Mensch.

Communication hubs in village squares, which can be regrou- ped according to your requirements and preferences, promote identification with your work environment. Workplaces have mobile design elements that can be adapted individually. Flexi- bility is key here, also in order to ensure needs-based accessibi- lity. A high degree of self-determination, which our design con- cepts enable in a natural and intuitive way, is a vital prerequisite for fully functioning agility,” says Ippolito Fleitz Group.

“A sunrise is a beautiful symbol that every day is an opportunity for a fresh start. It is the beginning of a new day, and thus a chance for happiness and improvement.

This is a perfect metaphor for the mission of People Incorporated. Their work helps people find a fresh start and experience an awakening in their mental health.

“This design concept focuses on optimism and warmth,” said Courtney Lehmann, Partner at Studio BV. “The material palette provides a gradient of warm tones and light wood, complementing People Incorporated’s brand colors. The saturation of color is balanced by lightness and neutrality, giving occupants moments to sit back and appreciate the beauty and color that surrounds them.”

Charity organization MND Association recently hired workplace design firm Oktra to design their new office in Northampton, England.

“The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association needed one cohesive space on a single floor, in order to better house their teams and improve collaborative working. We began the process by undertaking a two-week long workplace study in order to learn more about how to best support those living with MND and those who care for them.

Embarking on this project with the objective of embodying the MND Association’s values of openness and inclusivity, we built in wheelchair accessibility throughout as a fundamental part of the design. Creating an aesthetic connection between the two wings of the building, we joined the two halves with a storytelling area at the entrance to hold the heart of the space, and from which a variety of focus booths and collaborative workstations fan outwards.

Wellbeing is emphasised throughout in biophilic elements, acoustic considerations and soft furnishings, as well as the use of natural materials. This workplace evokes an engaged, welcoming feel which we hope will help support the teams at the MND Association toward their core ambition of ‘a world free from MND,” says Oktra.

Non-profit organization Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts recently hired workplace design firm Oktra to design their new office in London, England.

“The Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts needed to refresh their central London office, with a focus on providing an accessible work environment. We polled employees to learn more about their working needs, before setting out to construct an open, bright space with a greater number of quiet focus areas and breakout spaces in order to support and facilitate their various work strategies.

We realised the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts’ vision of a professional, accessible workspace, with acoustic, lighting, and ventilation considerations all taken into account to optimise employee wellbeing. Working to incorporate a sense of brand identity, we paid homage to the long history of the Sainsbury’s store with a large vinyl wall graphic of an historic photograph from their archives in the open plan space.

The new space provides a sleek user experience, with sustainable elements like carbon-neutral carpeting from Interface, a striking moss wall, and reused furniture and appliances featured throughout. As well as now being fully DDA compliant, the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts’ new workspace now delivers wellbeing-focused spaces including a wellness room and prayer room, supporting their employees in their daily working needs,” says Oktra.

Non-profit environmental organization Friends of the Earth hired workplace design firm Peldon Rose to design their new office in London, England.

“Having been in an office space which was disjointed, it was essential their new workspace was more practical and allowed them to introduce new ways of working. In partnership with commercial property agents, we helped Friends of the Earth assess the suitability of several buildings, creating office space plans to demonstrate how each one would meet the objectives set following our workplace consultancy. After assisting Friends of the Earth with protracted lease negotiations, they selected The Printworks – a 10,018 sq ft period warehouse in South London.

Once we found The Printworks, our design concept was called ‘What if the world was flat?’. Here we divided the office left to right along the earth’s latitudinal zones, creating geographical regions from around the world. Their new office features an iceberg meeting room in the polar regions, rain forest open spaces in the tropics and a boat, preserved moss walls and a tree-house at the heart of the hub space for meeting in the wetlands.

The cool calming effect of the polar regions lend themselves to quiet working, library spaces and as the temperature of the latitudes rises, so do the heat of the colours and in turn encourages an energy and pace to work in more collaborative spaces. A wetland hub boasts an all-hands flexible zone where people gather on a tiered hillside for contemplative work or for ‘Town Hall‘ style staff meetings.

The office provides a work space for the whole organisation of 170 staff, however there are only 78 traditional work stations. The rest of the office is made up of quiet rooms, informal meeting spaces, acoustic meeting pods, touchdown benches and breakout spaces strategically placed throughout the office. This smart working makes efficient use of the office space, with staff taking laptops to explore the earth each day, moving through latitudes.

Sustainability was unsurprisingly a big factor for Friends of the Earth and we were proud to gain the RICS Ska Rating for their new office. Almost all materials selected were recycled, reclaimed or recyclable. These included the wood floor which was taken from elsewhere in the building, Interface carpet tiles and a reception desk constructed from recycled cardboard. Other initiatives include motion detector and manual switch lighting, instant hot water taps, windows that open to allow in fresh cool air and an air cooling system which sucks cooler air in at night to remove the need for an aircon system,” says Peldon Rose.

Architecture and interior design firm Hames Sharley recently designed a new office for Western Australian Government in Perth, Australia.

“A strategic briefing process included ten leadership interviews, two rounds of 60-person workshops, an all-user planning review, and an all-staff town hall attended by 540 staff. This resulted in an understanding of the future work the office needed to support, and a co-created menu of work settings to meet those needs. User feedback from initial test fits/zoning plans was overtly included, leading to a planning response supported by the vast majority of staff. This included six distinct zones offering focus, process or collaborative workspace around a single kitchen hub that is scaled and functionally equipped to serve a potentially very high-volume usage.

The concept design weaves between four project-specific inputs: our client’s vision and their aesthetic responses, defined through the workshop process; the functional work these groups conduct at a whole-state scale; and a Reconciliation Action Plan artwork specifically commissioned by DPLH.

The sheer scale of our client’s work led the overarching design narrative and informed a vibrant graphics and wayfinding approach.

The result is a scheme of bright-and-bold colour and finishes that respects and responds to the context of our client and resonates with their staff. Importantly it hits the brief of being anything but ‘beige and bland’!,” says Hames Sharley.

“Not-for-profit organisation Cara engaged DesignInc to assist them with a feasibility and concept planning study to consolidate two ageing offices into a new headquarters on the city fringe.

The new head office location based at Hindmarsh provides Cara with accommodation for 125 staff. The base building warehouse upgrade will expand the working spaces into a mezzanine level at a later stage. The agile workplace solution provides Cara’s mobile workforce with adjustable height workstations, charging stations and dedicated personal lockers.

Quiet rooms, meeting rooms with integrated AV, study pods, lounge areas and moveable furniture allow flexible options for work on tasks away from fixed workstations in a comfortable environment that is designed to adapt as Cara continues to grow and evolve,” says DesignInc.
