Pharmaceutical company Bionical Emas hired workplace design studio Oktra to design their new office in Letchworth, England.

“Bionical Emas envisioned a professional, yet calming work environment that would improve the employee experience and welcome them back to the office after an extended period of remote working. They saw the new office as an opportunity to uplift their company culture and staff morale by encouraging communication and collaborative working. We formed a close working partnership with our client’s project team; taking them on a furniture showroom tour to get a feel for their desired aesthetic and ensuring our designers had a comprehensive understanding of their brand and values.

While subtle nods to Bionical Emas’ brand reflect their global identity, a neutral colour palette allows the imposing windows to evoke the manufacturing history of the building, giving their Hertfordshire office its own distinct identity. Nature is welcomed into the space with indoor planting, while desks are positioned around the building perimeter to maximise views of the outdoor green space and promote employee wellbeing.

The new office includes three meeting rooms, a private office, a spacious breakout area and teapoint for staff, and front of house reception with a supplementary refreshment point for visitors. With a choice of where and how they work, Bionical Emas’ teams now have more autonomy over their daily work environment – from a large collaboration table, to sit and stand hot desks, to quiet areas for focused work. This workspace is designed to be a catalyst for culture change; by bringing staff together in an environment designed for team building and social interaction, Bionical Emas are putting their employees’ job satisfaction first and demonstrating their commitment to excellence through office design,” says Oktra.

Pharmaceutical company MD Biosciences recently hired architecture and interior design firm EN Design Studio to design their new office in Tel Aviv, Israel.

“Most of MBD’s clients and guests are pharmaceutical companies and researchers. It was important for us to create a place that understands how to integrate the functionality required for this kind of technical complex, with all that this entails.

At the same time, we wanted the space to be fun and pleasant to work in. We aimed to produce a hyper-modern working environment that meets the needs of the complex’s permanent employees.

Adherence to two principles, which are in opposition to one another, creates conflict. Our initial instinct is to try to choose between the two but the sense of logic does not like to confront contradictions. Sometimes the best possibility is to accept the complexity of the conflict. Balance is the product of conflict, it’s not a compromise- It is a creative solution and an aspiration to let everything fit.

This line of thought led us to design a space that brings together, materially and formally, elements that create contrast, and we accentuated the textures and the spots where the different elements meet, in an effort to produce a feeling that everything fits, as well as a meeting between two worlds. We preferred to minimize ornamentation and maintain minimalism, and we sought to create a feeling of quality. Many of the spaces in the complex are required to comply with stringent standards, and undergo significant wear and tear. The challenge was to maintain the aesthetic even in those spaces.

One of the best examples is the floor, we understood that we have to work with a plastic material that meets the strict requirements set forth in the planning process. We understood that the solution was inherent in this very limitation, with respect to the type of material. The floor became one of the project’s most dominant elements.

The project’s greatest success was creating a rich, high-quality space which combines a hyper-modern working environment together with a functional laboratory complex while maintaining a uniform language, and most of all the feeling that functionality does not have to come at the expense of superb design.”

Pharmaceutical company Sanofi recently hired architecture firm spAce to design their new office in Mexico City, Mexico.

“The finishes were decisive in the project, combining them in a complementary way: wood, marble, carpets, glass, murals and furniture, helped accentuate the character of each stage. In general, neutral colors predominate throughout the project with some key color accents on walls, columns and carpets, where bright tones were used according to a chromatic palette that unifies the image and reinforces the identity of its values. The flow of reality is structured by overcoming the barriers of the common, functional and habitual, creating well-lit spaces designed to increase productivity that celebrate comfort and versatility.

The use of brand identifiers throughout the spaces, built through murals made by a great Mexican artist and furniture with artisan manufacturing techniques and symbology inspired by indigenous cultures, seek to honor Mexico’s rich natural heritage, from the Tarahumaras in Chihuahua to the Mayans in the Yucatan Peninsula.
Mexico is a tapestry of ancestral villages with unique visions, customs and aesthetic values. Taking patterns, textiles, colors and techniques from these tribes as inspiration, created a rich design language to sustain the connection. Death has meant, ever since ancient times, transformation, an opportunity to be reborn. The concept of life after death is also honored in this great architectural space. Architecture allows us to perceive and understand the dialectic of permanence and change to establish ourselves in the world and ally with culture and time.”

Beauty product company Nu Skin hired interior design firm Conexus to design their new office in Singapore.

“Designed with employee feedback on their working needs and preferences, the inclusive design is an inviting experience that supports the diverse ways Nu Skin employees like to work. The wide variety of work settings include a lifestyle café, hospitality-inspired lounge settings, private pods, phone booths as well as height-adjustable desks to configure sitting or standing workstations as desired. These activity-focused seating options encourage employees to change their seat as required throughout the day.

“As much as today’s workforce are working from home or traveling for business, what people crave is social interaction, in-person teamwork and really connecting with people,’ noted Brendan Khor, Managing Director of Conexus Studio. “That’s why we reimagined Nu Skin’s regional office to be a hybrid hub where one is naturally moving around and connecting with others along the way, as opposed to a place where everyone just comes in to work on their own thing.”

To further enhance team connectivity, the layout blurs traditional barriers, offering almost complete openness from one end to another. Rooms are fitted in glass in line with Nu Skin’s transparent company culture, displaying activity that would otherwise happen behind walls and doors.

To ensure a balance of vibrancy and privacy in the open layout, a progressive zoning approach was adopted, with social and focus work areas delineated with very different materiality. A setting for team gatherings, the Nu Skin Café is infused with energy and warmth, while a subdued and predominantly white space takes up the opposite end of the office, creating a distraction-free and calm setting. Lower-stimuli team collaboration areas sit in the centre of the office, with phone booths and meeting rooms on the fringes.”

Healthcare platform Signify Health hired architecture & interior design firm Perkins&Will to design their new office in Dallas, Texas.

“Signify Health desired interiors and a strategy that offered a refreshed sense of connectivity to bring together its culture and people. Influenced by Signify Health’s existing company culture, Perkins&Will incorporated a dynamic workplace model inspired by its forward-looking nature. Working in tandem with the Signify Health team, Perkins&Will developed a wide variety of appropriate space solutions for the company’s differing needs. The design team equipped the flexible office with collaborative work areas dispersed with meeting and breakout rooms to form “workplace neighborhoods.” The intention was to create transparency and accessibility, similar to a “living organism,” thereby tying the design theme back to healthcare and the company’s dedication to well-being.

A must-have feature for the renovation was the monumental staircase, conceptualized in collaboration with Big D Metals, to physically and metaphorically represent connectivity throughout the firm. The staircase promotes access to the executive team, while the tiered wood platform at the foot of the stairway serves as additional seating space, thereby enabling large town hall meetings. Similarly, there is a standout community area on the 7th floor that is solely dedicated to employees, which provides them with a space to gather, eat, unwind, and get to know each other. Large training rooms and office space round out the floor.

Wayfinding elements such as paint graphics were applied to the walls that extend to the sealed concrete in exit stairs and elevator lobbies, providing pops of color throughout the building. Beyond vibrant graphics, shades of grey with splashes of copper, orange, and blue complement Signify Health’s new branding. The design team also used pendant lighting to brighten the office further and arranged these pieces in sculptural groups to add a sense of whimsy to the space.

Perkins&Will incorporated sustainable elements throughout the project, inspired by the three certification programs: LEED, Well, and FitWell. The finished materials selected for Signify Health’s office interiors were vetted through Perkins&Will’s material health program, which is committed to reducing and eliminating any substances of concern in the built environment linked to negative impacts on human health. To the highest degree possible, the materials and products selected for Signify Health prioritized those that do not contain substances on Perkins&Will’s Precautionary List, including low volatile organic compound (VOC) materials. Another aspect integral to the design was the inclusion of eco-friendly and energy-efficient products such as low flow plumbing fixtures and motion sensored, dimmable LED light fixtures. Other sustainable and wellness highlights include the durable and environmentally responsible sealed concrete floors that define each floor’s main circulation path and accent paint found on each stairwell floor and walls further promotes walking and an active lifestyle for staff.”

Workplace design firm Oktra recently designed a new office for healthcare technology company GAMA Healthcare in Hemel Hempstead, England.

“With their building already fitted out to a high Cat A standard, we transformed the space even further, connecting the two floors with a striking bleacher seating area which also acts as a staircase at the heart of the space.

Constructed to cater to a company-wide hybrid working model, agile spaces and flexibility are prioritised over standard workstations, with mobile furniture elements enabling employees to customise their own space. Two treehouse meeting rooms in the rafters of the building feature glass walls that offer stunning views right down to the bleacher seating below. We also achieved a Gold SKA Rating for this project, ensuring a 99% waste recycling rate in its construction.

GAMA’s new workplace is also host to a world-class healthcare environment, containing complete training facilities comprised of a full hospital suite designed by LSI, the UK’s leading healthcare architects, as well as an adjacent classroom area for academic study, and is where GAMA intends to train 10,000 NHS staff. With a games area, wellness suite, and state-of-the-art video-conferencing technologies, this is a workspace built to enable and excite, as well as providing GAMA Healthcare with the facilities necessary to achieve their business goals,” says Oktra.

Pharmaceutical company Roche hired architecture & interior design firm SCA Design to design their new office in Singapore.

“The result was a minimalistic and muted interior design, without excessive elements. The monochromatic vibe, with the touches of green, coral pink and light blue were subtly introduced throughout the office, some within wall cubbies that doubled as isolated work areas, while others were on the carpets or ceilings. To add warmth, natural finishes like wood were used throughout the workplace. A moss wall was also included in the entrance area while plants that have low water consumption were arranged throughout the office not only for aesthetics but also as space dividers.

This project proved particularly complicated as during the design process as last year, the pandemic hit and Roche requested for a complete rethinking of the workplace to address a post-COVID-19 work environment. One of the main changes was the increase in flexible working spaces, ones that could be repurposed and reconfigured for a wide variety of use. These include more shared spaces to foster collaboration and socialisation which will bring warmth and energy to the workplace.
Adversely there are also areas with increased privacy like numerous small, isolated work environments, and even sound-proof pods for video conferencing and voice calls. These spaces were separated with glass partitions to still allow light through, creating a sense of openness.

The health and wellbeing of employees have also become a priority at Roche. The working areas were designed for a range of postures – seated, stool height, lounging, perching, standing. Also, the abundance of natural materials and greenery in the office both improves air quality and connects employees to the calming effect of nature,” SCA Design

Healthcare company Sanofi recently hired architecture and interior design firm LAB5 architects to design their new office in Budapest, Hungary.

“The concept represents the main attractions of Budapest, seen both by tourists and locals. These conceptual “sceneries” serve two functions, first they are giving colourful atmosphere for the interiors, second, they are helping the orientation on the area of 3.500 m2.

Parliament
Exterior and interior finishing materials and architectural motives of the Parliament building is evoked in the reception area. Vivid colours on carpets and pieces of furniture resemble the original red and blue carpets, yellow brass and wood finishes. They are accompanied with opal shaded lighting fixtures.

A graphical hint joins the pattern of the openable glazed walls of the board rooms, inspired by the architectural façade features of the gothic lancet windows.

Buda Castle
The image of the Buda Castle can be seen in the space of the work café, that is an area opening from the reception. Pastel mortal façade colours are seen on the walls and furnishing. Natural stone and patinated copper are characteristic in the Castle, so they are used on the floor – with bright green kitchen counter. The graphic design of the glass wall is following the organic ornamented motives of the Fisherman’s Bastion, strengthen by the white, broken stone imitation on the floor.

Gellért Mountain
The main functions of the Community Centre are relaxation and get-togethers, so we used the natural image of the spectacular mountain. The two main characters, rocky peaks and green filled sides both appear in this area. The rock itself becomes a stepped podium, embraced by the green.

The kiosk is the main element of this recreation zone, works as a trellis pavilion of the Centre. The glazed wall pattern design imitates the graphic details of the plants and rocks.

Elisabeth Bridge
There are two identic open office areas in the space, both shaped as bridges, Elisabeth and Liberty. Floors, walls, main furnishing are in monochromatic shades to evoke the clear white bridge of Elisabeth, and to contrast a bit as its asphalt pavement. The rivets come as details in focus, accompanied by the airy, lightsome lines, and paired with bold geometric patterns. Finishes of the columns are direct references to the columns of the bridge. Pastel mobile furniture and wall colours are evoking the summer sunlight.

Liberty Bridge
Carpets, walls, furnishing are dressed in the bright green colour of the bridge. Finishing of the columns are direct references to the bridge columns too, and the pale blue on the original surface behind them is the metaphor of the blue sky that can be seen standing on the bridge itself, looking through the structure. Graphic design of the glazed wall resembles the identical contour of the bridge.”

Private global pharmaceutical company recently hired workplace design firm Area to design their new office in London, England.

“Our client typically provides an agile, open-plan work setting throughout their global workplace portfolio. However, the results of an employee survey showed that the team don’t necessarily have agile tasks or workflows to complete. Therefore, existing large, open spaces were reconfigured to include pockets of enclosed collaboration spaces across the floor plate, providing privacy and comfort. Additionally, the boardroom facility was split into two adaptable spaces which can be used for meetings, training and workshops. The refurbishment also allowed for new branding elements to be incorporated into the scheme.

Understanding the importance of employee engagement, our client provides change champions for each project. This core team of champions communicate with their individual teams to ensure the business makes any steps towards change, together. For this project, change champions helped choose the furniture and finishes to guarantee the finished solution was fit for purpose.

The project was delivered through the initial lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic; therefore, additional health and safety measures were put in place to ensure the project was delivered in line with Area’s ROSPA Gold accreditation. These strict protocols allowed individuals could work at a safe distance from each other and access and exit the building safely. We also worked closely with our supply chain to ensure products were delivered on time so there was no disruption the original programme”, says Area.

Pharmaceutical company Vifor Pharma recently hired workplace design firm Oktra to design their new office in Staines Upon Thames, England.

“Vifor Pharma came to us looking for a new workspace to better support their working practices in a location closer to town and with more amenities. They wanted specific wellbeing measures factored into the design, like universal access to natural light and plenty of breakout spaces. We delivered a design scheme in harmony with their new building and its assets with built-in flexibility to support Vifor Pharma’s ways of working well into the future.

As a global company with design standards in place, we made sure the new space reflected the Vifor Pharma brand. Our design team worked closely with the client teams throughout the project, with a series of design workshops, furniture tours and sign-off meetings. The new workspace ties in elements of Vifor Pharma’s identity with angular graphics and a neutral palette punctuated by their brand colours, while distinctly retro furniture gives the Staines Upon Thames office its own identity.

The result is a working environment that promotes internal collaboration and agile ways of working. From flexible meeting rooms and training spaces to breakout areas and boardrooms that open onto roof terraces, Vifor Pharma’s new office provides the types of spaces their staff need to increase efficiencies, attract and retain top talent and continue to foster their strong company culture,” says Oktra.

Architectural design firm Studio BV recently designed a new office for mental health service Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“The rich new brand colors are accented by a palette of camel, creams, browns, soft greens and yellows as well as neutrals and features a mix of wood tones and soft colors to connect to the origin story of Harriet’s night journeys toward freedom.

The design team created custom artwork to tell the story of Harriet’s journal through the woods and landscape to escape her bondage. These patterns, images and colors are bold yet soothing. They are meant to make a strong connection to the staff and visitors reinforcing the message of hope and optimism in the work they are doing.

The design team redesigned the lobby experience to make sure that the first impression in the new space would be a friendly face, a clear brand impression and a large monumental stair. The stair was existing, but the design team redesigned the walls, lighting, colors and materials of the stair to give it a new look. It is now a feature and is the center of the story telling graphics for the space.

The new office features new therapy rooms and group rooms. A large flexible meeting space can be used to support community events and engagement. A new Harriet’s Closet area that is a retail like store that supports their client’s needs for food. A food pantry, new restrooms and a new café.

The new café features a teaching kitchen and a staff kitchen that can work together or independently with the use of a garage door. This allows the team at Tubman to help create new programs for teens and young adults that focus on healthy food,” says Studio BV.
