Railroad company Network Rail recently hired workplace design firm Oktra to design their new office in London, England.

“We began working with the Southern Region on the design and fit out of their six-storey hub HQ in January of 2020. When the pandemic hit, we refreshed our designs to be fully COVID-secure in order to facilitate a safe return to work for their employees whilst sticking to our original design principles and ensuring we built in the flexibility needed to adapt the layout if and when physical distancing relaxes.

The new office is designed around two-metre social distancing, supported by a two-metre floor grid and directional flow cut into the carpet which can be changed post pandemic. All meeting rooms are completely open to eliminate enclosed spaces. All necessary doors are automated and we’ve incorporated anti-microbial materials, occupancy sensors, bespoke signage and many other design elements to ensure Network Rail’s staff can return to the office safely and feel confident in doing so. Our design team also provided a bespoke training video to help teach staff how to use their new workspace.”

Vehicle manufacturer Polaris hired architecture & interior design firm NELSON Worlwide to design their new headquarters in Medina, Minnesota.

“Welcoming guests and employees is a new architectural expansion equipped with a visitor entrance and security desk. NELSON’s additions to the existing atrium included matching the glazing and roof structure for a cohesive design between old and new. With increased vendor conferencing in a central location, employees can now meet and greet their guests nearby the product showroom.

Open, collaborative spaces are included throughout the lobby for employees and their guests to kick the tires with intermittent meeting spaces from end to end. A separate employee entrance enters this space creating a more efficient circulation for day-to-day workers.

With a spotlight on employee amenities, NELSON reimagined Polaris’ collaboration and gathering zones. By centralizing all vehicle displays to the showroom, the team created more breakout spaces within the open office and introduced new graphic displays. This included updated employee work cafes, a new boardroom and executive pantry, and the refresh of all employee work zones.”

Automotive manufacturer Hyundai recently hired architecture and interior design firm IND Architects to design their new office in Moscow, Russia.

“The main design idea aims to avoid a monotonous and faceless open-plan office without any means of identification and to convey Hyundai‘s core identity features instead: caring, simple, creative. The central goal of the concept for the Hyundai Advance Design Studio is to provide a clearly recognizable allocation for the variety of requested working areas, constantly preserving overviews and visual connections between related functional areas. Besides, the spatial concept follows the permanent correlation between openness and privacy, between communication and concentration, supporting the flow of working processes and ideas.

A sequence of individual, connected areas characterizes the Design Studio as a homogeneous and clearly segmented functional space entity. The zoning of the total surface is achieved by implementing an artificial “landscape” into the existing space, composed of graded platforms combined with a modeled ceiling.

Interconnected zones of different levels and heights provide an exciting topography of functional areas, each of a clearly recognizable, different character and atmosphere. Accesses and space levels establish a coherent orientation within the studio. The positioning of grades and ramps does not only follow the optimization of the internal workflow, but also creates shortcuts, in order to shorten the distance of individual movements between all functional areas. Monochrome white color and the homogeneous materiality create a neutral space, emphasizing the visibility and presentation of the creative, colorful output of this department, ” said IND Architects.

Logistic company Vanderlande recently hired architecture & interior design firm Zyeta to design their new office in Pune, India.

“The workplace interiors exhibit a Rugged-Industry-Look that narrates the brand’s image. The design reimagines the company’s factories and manufacturing houses. There are exposed ceilings, factory-like rugged floors with concrete finishes that directly imitate the materials and logistic market. Besides the unique look, the industrial interiors also promote a sense of liberty and creativity among the employees. One of the main design highlights of the workplace is the lab-cum -display-area that depicts a conveyor belt testing machine.

Although the workplace aligns with the brand’s design guidelines, it stands apart with multiple innovative elements that connect the design theme to the brand story. For instance, the workplace has cabins that are walled with container-like corrugated sheets, mimicking the container surfaces associated with Vanderlande’s logistics business. Or the glass frosting and graphics across the workspace depicts Vanderlande’s work processes as a story.

The workplace uplifts employee wellness both in terms of spatial planning and design. There are guided accesses to different work zones to avoid employee gathering, a prerequisite element for the post-pandemic life. It is further accentuated by the provision of two separate Town Hall areas in the workspace to avoid cramming during office events.

Employee wellness is also promoted by the use of ergonomically inclined work settings. The design includes new age furniture like height-adjustable desks, comfortable lounges, and individual seating arrangements; maintained uniformly across the office floor. Although the layout includes clear demarcations that separate one area from another, there is ample room for safe collaboration in the tech-based scrum and huddle spaces with interactive displays and activity seats for easy access.

The entire place is also supplemented with biophilic design elements that act as visual barriers among different segments in the office. There are live planters spread uniformly across different zones to separate one area from the other. The office interiors also include well-thought acoustics with design elements like floating ceiling, wall panels, jaali partitions, and carpet floors.

In terms of color palette, ascent colors dominate the floors, walls, and other design areas to create a visual rhythm that adds harmony to the entire space. There is also a wellness room for the employees that serve as the ‘relaxing zone’ in the office. For the employees who want to take a break from the screens and engage with their colleagues, there are fun corners aka recreation zones with Foosball, Carom tables etc. The location of the workplace also plays a great role in facilitating the wellbeing factor through design. The work desks are positioned by the glazing-exterior-view to let every employee enjoy their inch of office view and relax now and then,” says Zyeta.

Automotive company Kavak hired architecture firm Hitzig Militello Architects to design their new office / hub in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

“Kavak is a company dedicated to the sale of used vehicles, leader in the Mexican market. The first step of this unicorn company to regionalize its business was Argentina. For this reason the identity came from the mother company, but it only had the graphic identity development.

Our job was to receive the directives on the guidelines on the functional organization used in Mexico, add the palette of materials, and with all this compose a sober tonal balance that accurately represents the brand. Therefore, we had to develop a tectonic identity linked to the graphic identity generated in Kavak Mexico. This is how we investigated materials that define the brand as is the example of the black corrugated sheet metal, the proposed furniture, lighting, which have been a key part of this new identity.

We explored and developed the resource of diagonals as an expression associated with the letter K, which can be verified from the windows, the lighting layout, and the metallic divisions & vegetation that shape the delimitation of the open space whose areas are divided by the consultation of the sample case and reception.

The space comprises a 300-square-meter customer service showroom (with a reception area, a meeting room and 14 terminals for consulting the sample collection), a comprehensive vehicle inspection center for on-the-spot vehicle condition assessment, and a further 15,000 square meters with the capacity to house up to 700 cars from the company’s inventory.”

Automotive distributor Inchcape recently hired workplace design firm Area to design their new office in London, England.

“Long rows of desks ran through the layout with no soft spaces or collaboration areas. The teapoint was underused and there was no central social hub where people could gather and interact. The client regarded the project as an opportunity not just to refresh the offices and bring them up to standard, but to develop a versatile workplace that would inspire staff, attract top talent and accommodate growth.

Soon after Area was appointed as the preferred contractor, the Covid-19 pandemic hit. As a result, the scheme was amended to take account of the reduced need for office-based workstations and provide more support for teamworking.

A bright new refreshment and meeting area has been added at the entrance to the second floor, where staff and visitors are greeted by the smell of new bean to cup coffee machines. The meeting suite on the third floor has been refreshed with new flooring, improved acoustics, and an enhanced AV installation. The teapoint and visitor waiting area on this floor has been transformed into an inviting environment for staff and visitors alike.

Circulation around the largely open layout is aided by floorcoverings that identify the different team and functional areas. Furniture is placed to break up the space, and judicious use of colour enlivens what was previously an uninspired beige colour scheme. Automotive imagery and quirky decorative touches add notes of energy and fun, such as the miniature car displays and engine block coffee table, while wood finishes and plants provide a biophilic effect,“ says Area.

A team of architects and designers from Cox Architecture recently completed a new office for toll-road operator Transurban Group in Brisbane, Australia.

“In 2019, Transurban engaged COX to design their new network of workplace and operation centres in Queensland. This project transitions their existing workplace environment from five sites across Brisbane to three central locations – reducing their footprint while expanding their opportunities.

Transurban is all about ‘keeping you moving,’ researching, designing and operating some of world’s largest infrastructure projects. Their connection to the urban environment is explored throughout our design, creating a space that reflects Transurban’s global presence and purpose. Working across Australia, the United States and Canada, the Brisbane office maintains the overarching global character of the company – but through a distinctly Queensland lens.
“Our design for Transurban’s new workplace reflects the cities they shape and support, through the lens of sub-tropical Brisbane. The workplace is a dynamic combination of technology and biophilic design with a strong focus on nurturing a sense of community and facilitating the serendipitous exchange of ideas,” COX Director, Brooke Lloyd.

A biophilic layer expressed through form, palette and planting reflects the sub-tropical location. Exposed ceilings are painted dark green with a digital and planted canopy hanging from above. Meeting rooms are purposely pulled back from the façade to create quiet break-out moments and to reinforce a sense of transparency.

Designed across three floors, the workspace is connected by a large atrium and stair space. The top level includes a social kitchen and collaborative space, training rooms and town hall.

Wanting to dispel the myth that infrastructure is boring – Transurban use their newest workspace to nurture a progressive future. The result is a space that supports staff wellbeing, sustainability, streamlined technology and a culture of innovation,” says Cox Architecture.

Subsidiary of the Austrian Holding Porsche, Porsche BG recently hired interior design firm KMAN Studio to design their new office in Sofia, Bulgaria.

“We carefully carried the philosophy of the brand into the interior design through architectural elements: use of glass partitions to suggest transparency, eco-friendly materials, custom-made furniture and lighting elements are used to create a comfortable environment adapted to the company’s needs.

Vibrant color interventions in some interior elements are used to represent each brand department, adding character and distinction to each. Custom-made parametric slats in departments are used to allow light and views in for all the staff but the right quantity of privacy from the hallway.

This design supports the mission of creating a contemporary work environment that promotes people to work at an exceptional level, ” says KMAN Studio.

American automaker Ford Motors Company recently hired architecture & interior design firm McIntosh Poris Associates to design their new office in Detroit, Michigan.

“McIntosh Poris Associates was responsible for the renovation and restoration of an existing 19th‐Century wood timber and masonry building into a modern office for Ford Motor Company’s self‐driving business unit. Originally planned for Buhl Sport Detroit, the building was purchased by Ford during construction to house Ford’s self‐driving business unit and attract fresh talent as part of the company’s commitment to enhancing Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. McIntosh Poris Associate’s design concept was to bring back the building’s original form and retain as much of the historic character as possible while meeting Ford’s requirements.

The extensive renovation involved shoring up the walls and floors and refinishing the original timber beams and wood flooring. McIntosh Poris Associates installed expansive steel windows and glass floor‐to‐ceiling garage doors to maximize the permeation of natural light. Brick walls, high ceilings, and exposed structure invoke a simple and industrial warehouse feeling reflective of the previous use and original architecture. New elevators, stairs, and connections between previously separate spaces were critical, as Ford prioritized easy interaction among employees and teams.

Open workspaces offer a flexible environment for collaboration while glass phone booths and meeting rooms allow for focused work and discussion. The design includes a ground‐floor garage that houses Ford’s self‐driving vehicles. A significant amount of roof area was converted into a terrace for Ford employees to use on a seasonal basis.”

Global shipping company MSC recently hired interior design firm Capexus to design their new office in Prague, Czech Republic.

“CAPEXUS has created a facility that reflects MSC’s identity: the reception and adjacent guest area are dominated by a large model ship. We also managed to place a shipping container in the office. It serves as a place to meet and relax. In addition, it has its own reservation system, which can easily be turned into a full-fledged meeting room.

“Getting a shipping container to the eighth floor was no easy task,” said CAPEXUS architect Martin Židek. “But it is such a playful and above all authentic element of the interior that we could not resist. The container first had to be cut and then welded back to its original shape on the spot. It was then furnished with a glass partition and carpentry elements.”

The architects mainly used materials like birch plywood, concrete and profiled glass. They used birch plywood for the cladding lamellas of the building core and, very atypically, for the frames of the glass partitions by Verti. In addition, it is also used in the doors and atypical furniture.

In the Green Point building, which is owned by Alessandro Pasquale, the owner of Karlovarske mineralni vody (Mattoni), concrete is one of the main materials of the design, which is why the columns of the structure are left without significant modifications. In the corridor around the entire perimeter of the floor, there is an open ceiling where the concrete structure is visible.

The result is a compact space capable of meeting the requirements of all members of the MSC team over the long term. MSC’s offices are proof that even a completely empty space can be turned into functional and progressive offices in an extremely short period of time. The implementation of the project took only three months,” says Capexus.

Train operating company Southeastern recently hired workplace design firm Oktra to design their new office in London, England.

“Approaching a lease expiry, Southeastern Rail appointed us to give their workplace an update that considered form and function. Their teams needed a single floorplate for improved connectivity and communication between departments, and a workspace that reflected the company’s brand. We created a warm, welcoming environment that offers future-proof flexibility and a clear visual identity.

We held a series of workshops with the client team and conducted workplace consultancy in order to fully understand their ways of working and their business strategy. We used insights gathered from interviews, champion workshops, office tours and rail station visits, to shape a design scheme that fuses connectivity and collaboration with Southeastern Rail’s visual identity and history.

The new space includes a wide range of breakout spaces and work areas suited to different working styles including formal and informal meeting spaces, offices, open plan desking and a central teapoint with impressive views of the river Thames. Southeastern Rail’s growth is embedded in their new workspace which has the ability to facilitate an increase in activity-based and flexible working as they expand,” says Oktra.
